Obituary
Allen Thomas Murphy was the only child born to Mildred, in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 12, 1938. He grew up on the historic Westside of Atlanta where he spent his elementary and high school years. He was a member of a local Baptist church where his mother, Mildred and his talented, singing aunts, encouraged him along the way.
Allen Murphy began his music career at a very early age. When the older musicians wanted him to perform with them they would have to go to his home and get permission from his mom, Mildred. Allen would later find himself working with and helping train younger musicians and singers. He once taught a group of young neighborhood boys to sing who were known as The Gardenias. The lead singer is now the infamous Calvin Arnold. At the age of 14, Allen Murphy was a member of a Rock and Roll Singing group known as ''The Four Dots... The group appeared on local TV and in concerts throughout the southeast States.
Allen studied percussions privately with several local teachers and became proficient enough to be accepted to a National Tour with Cleveland Lyon, an Atlanta Musician Organ Player. The Tour Band worked out of The Show Artist Theatrical Agency, became known as a Back Up Band and traveled throughout the United States. Allen later became a member of the House Band at the then famous Royal Peacock Supper Club on Auburn Avenue. During this time, Atlanta was still a very much segregated city and Auburn Avenue was the center of Black entertainment in the country.
Allen was a member of the first Black Modern Jazz Band, led by Duke Pearson, to play and sing on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. He played with the Roy Mays Band at Atlanta's Maranno's Steak Trumpet Club. He performed with Dakota Station at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas, appeared at the Peppermint Lounge in New York City, toured with the Drifters, Cape Cod and the Coliseum in Atlantic City New Jersey.
In the 1960's, Allen married the beautiful and talented widow, 26 year old Selma Jackson, a singer and mother of two children, Zachary and Desdimonia. Allen and Selma would sometimes perform together. He supported Zachary when he worked with his fellow musician friend to help him learn to play the trumpet.
Allen Murphy teamed up with two former high school buddies and opened a night club and restaurant on Piedmont Road in downtown Atlanta, The Cave, known for its after hour Jam Sessions. James Brown and his band once gave a surprise performance at The Cave. Allen later joined forces with Roy and Ralph Mays in a Dixieland band known as the Peachtree Strutters. He later joined The Paul Mitchell Trio at The Atlanta Playboy Club and played alongside fellow musicians Laymon Jackson on bass and Paul Mitchell on piano. The Paul Mitchell Trio engagements included performances throughout Georgia and the United States, The Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Atlanta Falcon Half Time Games, with The Great Count Basie at the Fox Theater, St. Simon Island, and over 20 year stay at Dante's Down The Hatch in Underground Atlanta and on Peachtree Street in Buckhead. Allen really enjoyed his stay at Dante's Down The Hatch and often gave cameo performances after he retired from working there. Allen's next marriage was to an entertainer, Matilda Walton and from that union had two children, Kerriem and Amber. Allen's experiences made him wise. He had simple wisdom . He would sometimes say "can't un-ring the bell". He gave his son, Kerriem "an appreciation for history. He was a cool Cat... Allen was also a chef, a photographer, and a very good dancer.
Allen Thomas Murphy, a multi-talented musician, singer, actor, songwriter, band leader, business owner, and drummer helped forge a deep rooted fervent love for his music as the drummer who sings. He performed with The Allen Murphy Quartet and other musicians like John Robinson and his wife, Rosemary. His recordings, television and movie credits are numerous. He was happy with his live recording of a Tribute to W. C. Handy. Allen recorded many songs and albums throughout his over 60 years in the music entertainment industry, the latest which was recorded with the Peachtree Strutters. He had the privilege of working with many well-known artists in the music business; however nothing pleased him more than performing with his great-granddaughter, Faith.
Allen Murphy leaves to cherish his memory and legacy, his children, Amber Murphy (La Mirada, California), Kerriem Shaw (Atlanta, Georgia), Desdimonia ..Debbie.. Cross (Decatur, Georgia), and Zachary "Bunny.. Jones (Reeder, North Dakoda); grandsons, Joseph, Gibran and Royce Cross (Georgia), and Zachary Jones, Jr. (Kansas); greatgrandchildren, Jailyah (17), Faith (12), Kamal (7), Miracle (5), Mygnon (6), Senia (6), Franklin (2), and Alia (2) Cross (Georgia), Ashley (16) and Audrey (11) Jones (Kansas); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
