Willie Hulon Mitchell, Jr. was born in Kelly, Georgia on July 21,1926. He was the eldest son of Willie Hulon Mitchell, Sr. and Lizzie Lee Mitchell. The Mitchells praised and worshipped the Lord. Willie Mitchell received his education from the Shadydale County Schools, where he excelled in mathematics. Religious training was also a requirement in their home.
Willie moved to Atlanta in 1952. He met his wife- to- be in a local eatery where she was employed. Willie's first act of chivalry was quite impressive to the Miss Odell Middlebrooks. Therefore, after a short time of dating they were married on February 11, 1953. To this union were born three children, Patricia Ann, Norman, and Debra Denise Mitchell.
Willie worked several jobs before landing a job with Rexall Drug Co. where he pulled marked and packed medical supplies. He retired from Rexall after 26 years of service. He then worked for Williams Brothers Construction Co. and later secured his own cleaning service, entitled Mitchell Cleaning Crew. He contracted himself and his crew on many cleaningjobs around the city.
Although Willie worked many jobs none was so exciting as his boxing career as a Prize Fighter. Willie's true love was music. He sang tenor in the style of the late Sam Cooke. Willie' s first singing group was the famous True Light Singers. The group sang at local churches as well as the Atlanta City Auditorium. The True Light Singers made several recordings before disbanding. Willie soon moved to a family- oriented singing group that sang irl "ocal churches and abo made recordings. He sang with tne R.H. Gospel singers for 37 years.
Shy Temple C.M.E Church was lucky to have Willie as a member for 51 years. He served as a trustee, senior choir member, bus driver, and janitor for the church. Willie insured the grounds were kept immaculate. He even lent his services to his wife ' s church, Turner Monumental A .M .E.
Willie leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of fifty years, Odell Mitchell; son, Norman (Colleen); three daughters, Patricia Mitchell Bryant (Willie Lamar), Debra D. Mitchell, and Barbara Ann White; daughter-in-law, Dr. Jayan S. Allen; three granddaughters, Alicia P.
