A nnie Luevenia Mitchell-Henley was born in Blountstown, Calhoun County, Florida on August 14, 1934.
She was the Hrst of two children born to the marriage of late George Mitchell and the late Maudie Mae McLeod Mitchell Oater, Maudie Mae McLeod Ransom). During the War years, Luevenia moved with her mother to Panama City, where her mother took a job in the local naval shipyards. When her mother married the late A.J. Ransom Sr., a Panama City high school chemistry teacher and entrepreneur, Luevenia continued to live with her grandmother, Annie Luevenia Tolbert. Young Luevenia attended the local public schools in Panama City, including Rosenwald High School where she played the trumpet in the school band, and a guard on the girls' basketball team. She later attended Gulf Coast Community College.
Luevenia was employed in Panama City flrst as a lunchroom supervisor in the local schools, and then as salesperson at W.T. Grant Department Stores. She was an active member of the local Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. She eventually was married to the late Budy Reed and to the late Bobby Griffin.
Luevenia came to Atlanta in 1972 to undergo a complicated vascular surgery from which she recovered remarkably. She decided to remain in Atlanta, where she became an established member of the West Hunter Street Baptist Church. It was also in Atlanta where her spirit of entrepreneurship and generosity came into full bloom. She followed her brother into the art of photography and shot pictures for many churches, celebrities and major political events around the city. In the early 1980's, she fell in love with and married the late Fred Henley, an avid golfer. Luevenia embraced his love of the game and established, along with him, the Senyo Golf Association which provided wholesome activity for young boys and girls. Convinced of the merits of the golfing program, Coors, AT&T and The Coca Cola Foundation provided funding and donated many of the golf clubs. Her gift of golf to her young grandson, Gerald, eventually resulted in a full scholarship defraying all of his college expenses. Luevenia also established Annie Henley Tours, transporting hundreds of Atlantans for weekend turnaround recreation at the various Mississippi Casinos.
Lue was also a lover Hshing and of all sports. With her trademark red cap turned backwards, she rooted for all Atlanta's home teams and held season tickets to the Falcons games. Luevenia's home was truly "the house on the side of the road" for many college students, travelers, friends and relatives passing through Atlanta, needing a place to lay their heads. She had a pure heart and never turned away anyone truly in need.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Maudie Mae Ransom; father, George 11itchell; stepfather, Arthur J. Ransom Sr.; three brothers, Leonard Mitchell, Gregory Augustus and K.enneth Foster Ransom.
