Sgt. Robert McKibbens was born in Atlanta, GA on November 23, 1923. He departed this life on October 8, 1994.
Robert joined the Atlanta Police Department on March 8, 1948. Though he was not allowed to wear his uniform to work, but yet had to change clothes at the Butler Street Y.M.C.A., he was still proud to say he was one of the first Black Patrolmen on the force . He worked diligently as an officer and did love his job. He was promoted to detective, and years later, he was promoted again to Sergeant. As he continued his career with the Atlanta Police Department, he worked in Burglary, Auto Theft, Larceny, and just before retiring, he worked in Community Relations.
He married Helen James on July 4, 1954. A union of three children was established, Robin, Robert and Joseph Colbert. Helen passed on November 27, 1976. He will be missed greatly, as he was loved dearly .
Sgt. McKibbens is survived by his daughter, Robin Davis and husband Stanley L. Davis; two sons , Robert Jr. , and Joseph R. Colbert; four grandchildren, Tiffany R. Sanford, Tanisha L. Pope, Angela C. Hill and Joseph Colbert, Jr. ; one brother, Sam T . McKibbens and wife Joyce; two aunts , Corrine Arron and Glada Arron; and host of other family and friends .
