Rinah C. McConnell, a woman from humble beginnings, was blessed with courage and a great vision for her life. She was born in Fayette, Alabama, the middle child of six children born to Earl and Belle Carr. Under the guidance of her devoted parents, she received Christ at an early age.
Rinah graduated from the Fayette County Training School; and shortly thereafter married her high school sweetheart, Eckford McConnell. After the birth of their children and her husband's service in the US Army Air Corp, she convinced him to attend college. They moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he enrolled in the Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes (Alabama State University). The following year Rinah also enrolled in college. So, for three years, the entire family was in school. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Alabama State in the spring of 1954. The family joined her husband in Gadsden, Alabama where he had begun teaching elementary school; and she began her 41 year career as an elementary school teacher.
Rinah loved teaching and taught school until she was seventy-five years of age. She delighted in chance encounters with her former students; and she loved to recount fond memories of special activities enjoyed with her classes.
After her marriage to Eckford ended in divorce, Rinah boarded a train on her way to a teaching position in Florida. During an overnight layover in Atlanta, she met a stranger (perhaps an angel) who persuaded her to settle in Atlanta, instead. By the end of the following day, she had a place to live and a scheduled job interview. Initially, while teaching in Atlanta, she also worked for the Federal Government as a relocation worker in an Urban Renewal Project and attended classes at Atlanta (Clark Atlanta) and Colorado State Universities.
Rinah's career is noted for her philanthropic and social involvement. She was a member of the Georgia Partners, an exchange group hosting families from around the world. As a participant in this program, she traveled to Brazil and enjoyed staying with a host family. She was a long time member of the Atlanta Chapter of the Continentals; and a founding member and President of the College Park Chapter. The Continentals conduct a number of projects benefitting the schools and hospitals in the metro-Atlanta area. Rinah was one of the first African American members of the Ben Hill United Methodist Church. She served as the superintendent of Sunday school and a member of the Jewels and Partners.
After retiring from the Atlanta Public Schools, Rinah traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean Islands.

Rinah is survived by her daughter, Charlotte L. McConnell; son, Mickey C. McConnell; grandchildren, Chrissey Jackson and Mickey C. McConnell, Jr.; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; loving nieces and nephews; cousins; and a group of devoted and caring friends.
