OBITUARY
George Orman McCaiep, Jr. was born April 12, 1939 in Lawrence, Kansas to the late George Orman McCalep, Sr. and Dorothy Cropp, and grew up on the campus of Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama. Early in life his leadership skills were evident in high school where he played varsity football and basketball at Councill Training and was captain of the football team. As a youth he was active in scouting and attained the level of Eagle Scout.
vVhile attending Alabama A&M (1956-60) he led the school's'football team for four years as quarterback, and was the captain of the football and tennis teams his senior year. In addition, he was selected to the SIAC Football All Conference Team and lettered in varsity basketball for two years. McCalep was known as a "Triple Threat" in that he led the SIAC in passing, punting and rushing on several occasions. He was inducted into the Alabama A&M University Athletic Hall of Fame, and he was also inducted into the SIAC Hall of Fame.
NlcCalep was a former high school biology teacher and football and basketball coach. After leaving high school teaching he spent several years in financial investments as a leading divisional sales executive for Waddell and Reed, Inc. In 1973 he started his own brokerage firm, National Financial Services. McCalep, as owner/manager of his own company was named one of the Outstanding Black Business Executives in the country by Black Enterprise Magazine (June 1973).
Dr. McCalep accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1960 while serving as football coach and biology teacher at Southern Normal Academy in Brewton, Alabama. Dr. McCalep joined the Episcopal Church upon his conversion to Christianity. He subsequently aligned his membership with the Baptist faith and served in various congregations as his residence changed.
McCalep continued his education by earning Masters degrees from the University of Kansas and John Carroll University, Doctorate degree from Ohio State University, and Master of Divinity degree from Morehouse School of Religion affiliated with the Interdenominational Theological Center.
It was in 1979 that the Greenforest Baptist Church called Reverend George McCalep to pastor its small congregation of 25 ,members located in a transitioning community in South DeKalb County. In 1989 the church moved into its present facility now located on over 100 acres. In a few short years Pastor McCalep resigned his position as associate professor at Georgia State University to serve Greenforest full-time. Calling his ministry a teaching-preaching ministry, Pastor McCalep instituted an after-school program that is now serving the community as the Greenforest-McCalep Early Learning Center and Christian Academic Center with over 1100 students enrolled. The Christian Education ministry has gro n in attendance from 80 to over 1,000 Pastor McCalep has initiated and encouraged many other ministries in the church as well as in the community, such as the Green Forest ommunity Development Center, the South DeKalb Church Federal Credit Union, and The Forest at Columbia Apartro.ynt complex. Dr. McCalep
served six years (1996-2002) as a member of the MARTA-Eoard of" Directors. He was a best-sell-
ing author. He wrote t\velve books of church growth, stewardship, and a new one to be released on January 7, called Blessed, Healed and Delivered, co-authored with his wife, Dr. Sadie Turner McCalep.
Pastor McCalep's reputation has been that of a dynamic leader who has maintained great integrity throughout his n1inistry. He is recognized across this country and in many parts of the world as a visionary, great preacher, teacher, and publisher. The membership of Greenforest will ahvays cherish the men1ory of a caring Pastor who knew them by name.
Pastor McCalep is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dr. Sadie Turner McCalep; three sons, Michael Orman (Hope), George Orman III (Tracie), Timothy Orman (April); grandchildren, Christopher, Victoria, Luke Orman, Cornelius and Bryan; one sister, Mrs. Patricia Mcintosh (Ron); niece Shawntee Mcintosh; two special cousins, Harrison McCallop and Rudy McCallop. Adopted son and daughter Stanley and Zipporah King.
