06ituary
Ruth Phillips was born March 1, 1931, the only child of Hesther Fitzpatrick and Frank Phillips in Atlanta, Georgia at Grady Memorial. She liked to refer to herself as a "Grady Baby". Ruth was raised by her loving grandmother, Clifford Foster. As a young girl, Ruth would travel from Atlanta to Woodstock to spend the summer and fell in love wtth the quaint, little town.
Ruth attended Booker T. Washington High School where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Premter Lee. To this union their only son, Otis Lee was born in 1948. She worked for several years as a telephone operator for Western Electric, a subsidiary of Bell Telephone Company.
Ultimately, Ruth relocated to Chicago working professionally as a licensed Cosmetologist where she met and married Adolf McAfee in 1964. She and Adolf remained close friends even after she returned to Atlanta as a retiree, the summer of 1987. They continued constant contact, she supported and cared for him through his battle with cancer. He preceded her in death.
After retirement Sister McAfee dedicated her life to Christ-she was not one to sit idle but instead delighted in working for the Lord. She always wanted to "Let her little light shine" and this was evident by her legacy of work in the A.M.E. Church. One of her greatest loves was for the Missionary Society. She taught Sunday Morning Bible study and served as president of the local Missionary Society. Ruth was appointed Area Leader for the North Area which covered 25 churches. You could always find her in attendance at all meetings no matter what level or location. She loved to travel and believed in receiving information first hand and stayed abreast of all church related matters.
Because of Sister McAfee's strong leadership skills, she became intimately involved in the Lay Organization. That position suited her just nght because it was a position that required depth of knowledge and understanding of the Dtscipline of the A.M.E. Church.. .and that she had! Sister McAfee loved the Lord, which is why she taught Sunday Morning Bible study and asked to be backup teacher for the Adult SMBS class. She just didn't want to give up teaching the Word even though her physical health was declining.
Sister McAfee was a stickler for being on time and kept things in order, whether it was in her personal life or in her dealings with the church. She was a kind and loving person who showed warmth and generosity to everyone around her. Without a doubt, Sister McAfee was known for her faithfulness. You could always count on her to do what she said she would do. She would tell you very quickly, "let your yes be yes and your no be no".
Her favorite song was, "This Little Light Of Mine" as well as "Anchored In The Lord" and her favorite Scripture was "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me"-Phil4:13. She lived by this Scripture promise. She received numerous awards and honors, but as an avid reader her proudest moment occurred most recently at Allen Temple Church. Because of the love she demonstrated for her church, the new Ruth L. McAfee Bookstore was dedicated in appreciation of what she has done and what she has meant to so many.
On June 18, 2008, Sister McAfee made a peaceful transition from this life. She has been a light to Allen Temple Church and a faithful servant. Thank God for sending her!
In addition to her son, Otis (Mary Alice) Lee of Chicago, IL, she is survived by her granddaughter, Cecily Murray of San Diego, CA, who was a joy to her. She proudly claimed Cathy Miles of Houston, TX as her daughter and welcomed Cathy's daughter LaTasha and granddaughter, Johnna as her very own; in addition she loved her stepchildren; aunts, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Sister McAfee will be missed by her church family, Missionary sisters, Lay members and her close Woodstock "buddies", Mrs. Polly Johnson, Mrs. Leslie Edwards and cousin Mrs. Lillie Mae Brownlee. She was so dearly loved.
