OBITUARY
Riago Joseph Martin, D. H. L. a descendant of Maximillian C and the fifth child of the late John D. Martin of Mobile and tl late Adele Collins Martin of Mon Luis Island, was born in M< Alabama on January 1, 1905. He departed this life February 1995.
His early training was begun at St. Peter Claver Elementar Emerson Normal Industrial Institute. He was a 1925 High~ graduate.
He later attended Talledega College A.B. 1929 and Fisk Univ M.A 1945. Further post graduate work was done at Columbi The University of Oklahoma .
Doctors of Humane Letters, were conferred by Morris Brow lege and Allen University in 1966.
On August 26, 1936, he was married to Myrtle Balasco of :N Alabama. To this union one daughter, Carol Theoda Martin E was born.
A lifelong and devoted Catholic. He was active in many 1~ national Catholic organizations. He was an ardent and passi member of St. Peter Claver Church since 1944.

His work experience dates back to Avery Institute, Charleston, SouthCarolina, 1929. Following that Lincoln Academy, Kings Mountain, North Carolina, 1936-38, thence Henry County Training School, McDonough, Georgia, Central High, Waycross, Georgia, Ballard High School, Macon, Georgia, 1944-49, Ballard-Hudson High, 1949-70.
After leaving direct contact with the public schools, he served as Director of Research, Curriculum Coordinator, Consultant, Visiting Professor of Education at various Commissions, Associations and Universities.
Educational and civic affiliations are many and varied that include the following: President Georgia Teachers and Education Association, President Georgia Council of Principals, Board of Directors, Georgia Teachers and Education Association, President Bibb County Teachers Association, President American Teachers Association, Chairman of The Board of Trustees, Georgia Teachers and Education Association, State of Georgia Salary and Research Committee NEA Director, Georgia National Association of Secondary School Principals, White House Conference International Cooperation, assisted in organizing GAE in 1970, Bibb County Board of Education, 1972, Vice Chairman of Board of Director, 1979.
Dr. Martin assisted with integration of Bibb County Schools.
His civic affiliations include: American Cancer Society, Economic Opportunity Council, United Givers Fund, Homosophian Club, Macon Hospital Authority, First Minority Member of Bibb County Democratic Executive Committee. First Black Chairman of Democratic Party of Bibb County, Executive Committee Health Systems Agency. President Clinton- Member Task Force Americans For Change.

He was a Member and one of the Founders Lambda Phi Chap Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
His honors have been ~verse and many from varied groups: Georgian ofYear By State, Man ofWisdom, Race Relations But and Professional, Meritorious Service Award, by NAACP as < the 100 men in Progress.
In addition to the above, Dr. Martin was the Executive Directc Primary stock holder of Thomas Memorial Funeral Home, from December 1977 to January 2, 1995. This was a lifelong g his since he worked at a young age at a funeral home.
He gave himself freely to all areas of activity. His devotion to 1 and spiritual development made him a sought after person. H always be remembered as one who served readily and eagerly ever a voice or hand was needed to preserve our ideals and vir1
He is survived by one devoted daughter, Carol (Clifton) Hadle~ con, Georgia, two devoted granddaughters, Miss. Nicole M. H and Miss. Niche T. Hadley, Macon, Georgia. Three devoted n Margaret (Clinton) Elmore, Montgomery, Alabama, Jacqueline Mobile, Alabama, Edna (Emile) Easton, Sr., Mobile, Alabama devoted nephew, Lemond (Thelma) Godwin, Atlanta, Georgia f great nieces, five great nephews, eleven great great nieces, four great nephews.
