"He Was Different"
He was different, he was special Unique in a thousand ways, He was giving, he was loving, And we'll miss him all our days.
His legacy was friendship He was so giving of his time, His bequest was his faith in God, His family, and all mankind.
He knew sorrow in great measure And was stung by illness, too. But neither could defeat him, Nothing his faith subdue.
And so instead of mourning As we remember him this hour, We really should be celebrating The blooming of a flower.
Because you see He was different, he was special Unique in a thousand ways. He was loving, he was giving And we'll miss him, miss him, all our days.

Obituary
Today, God Almighty has brought us together to give Him honor, praise, glory and adoration for the life He has allowed us to enjoy through Hugh Dorris Manning. H.D. Manning was one to be looked up to for his love, joy, happiness and commitment to God, his family, community and the Christian Church.
Hugh Dorris Manning was the only child of the late Guy and Corrie Lilly Grogan Manning. He was born on December 8, 1927 in Alpharetta, Milton County, Georgia, and lived in the Alpharetta and Roswell communities all his life.
Hugh Dorris received his elementary school education in the Fulton County public school system in Alpharetta and was a 1946 graduate of Historic Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
On July 3, 1946, Hugh Dorris married his childhood sweetheart, the late Minnie Mozell Cook. Born to this union were two daughters, Virginia Louise Manning Patterson and the late Doris Nadine Manning Holmes. He later married Rosa Wilborn Ghee and together they nurtured an extended family.
Hugh Dorris joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and was the third generation of his family to worship and serve as members of Zion. He labored tirelessly at Zion as a Sunday School Secretary, Sunday School Teacher and Baptist Training Union Teacher. He was ordained as a Deacon of Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend P. L. Jones in the mid 1950's. Faithfully, Deacon Manning served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for twenty-two years and in that capacity chaired the Pastor's Search Committees for the last three Pastors of Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He was a humble servant of God . He remained dedicated and active to the end as a Deacon , a member of the Laymen's Ministry and an original member of the Male Chorus and the Golden Voices .
Hugh Dorris was a member of the Groveway Community Grou p, Inc. fo r more than forty years and was serving as its Assistant Chaplain until his death . The motto for Groveway is , "If I Can Help Somebody", and he epitomized that motto by always giving a helping hand to anyone in need . He served as the administrator of the Historic Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Roswell and the Pineview Cemetery of Alpharetta . Previously he was a member of the Roswell Historical Society.
After thirty-nine years of employment with Lockheed Martin, he retired as a Safety Engineer in 1989. While employed there, he received numerous promotions, awards and recognitions.
Hugh Dorris Manning leaves to cherish his legend and memory, his loving and devoted daughter, Mrs. Virginia Patterson (Charles); two grandsons, Mr. Reginald Dwayne Byrd (Marlys) and Mr. Charles Manning Patterson; one great-grand daughter, Jasmine Marie Byrd; one aunt, Mrs. Rachel Ransom; one uncle, John Thompson Grogan; one godson, Adrian Guest; his best buddy, Deacon Alexander "Sudie" Nuckles, Jr., the Weinstein Adult Daycare Center of the Atlanta Jewish Community Center family in Dunwoody, and a host of other relatives and friends.
