OBITUARY
Helen Euretha Timmons was born January 31, 1947 to Adolphus and Helen Timmons in Kings Ferry, FL. Helen graduated from Pine Forest High School and received her Bachelor's degree in Education from Florida Memorial College in 1969. There she also met the love of -her life, William Lyons, whom she married on March 21, 1970. Helen continued her education earning a Master's degree in Reading from Nova Southeastern University.
Helen was a member of the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She served on the Hospitality Ministry, allowing her to use her pleasant attitude to meet and welcome members and guests on Sunday mornings. She also followed her passion for teaching by working with children during Vacation Bible School and was even able to draft William to be her Craft Assistant.
Helen was a dedicated and beloved teacher with an intense passion for reading. She was very good at her job and was known as a "teachers' teacher." She became a Reading Coach with the Alliance of Quality Schools Program where she helped other teachers develop their talents in the classroom. She loved teaching and she loved her students. It was not unusual for her to be approached with excitement in stores, restaurants and other places by one of the hundreds of students she taught during her 35-year te~]ure with the Broward County School System.
Helen believed in giving and helping others. There were many children she met during her teaching career that had never experienced the joys of Christmas. She adopted families and provided toys, clothing and support throughout their elementary years. Once they had finished elementary school, she went back and adopted a new family and began the cycle of giving again. She continued this for many years. In addition to supporting families for Christmas, she also provided families with full Thanksgiving dinners complete with all the trimmings.
Helen's giving reached further than Broward County and the United States. She worked with Missionary Janice Lewis on the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church Missionary Project in Africa. She adopted a family and provided clothing, food and educational support. This was an ongoing project that she worked on for several years. It was a great source of satisfaction for her to be able to help children get an education. She was always elated when she received communication from them that they were progressing, attending school and had ample food and clothing.
Upon her retirement, Helen traded her grade book for a golf scorecard as she and William spent countless hours on golf courses across the country. One of her most exciting moments was playing golf in Hawaii. She was never able to get that elusive hole-in-one but came close many times. She also embraced her love of photography returning from adventures spanning the globe, from Africa to Hawaii and beyond, with breathtaking photos.
On January 16, 2014, Helen answered the call of her Heavenly Father. She was preceded in death by her father, Adolphus Timmons, and leaves to cherish her memory her dear mother Helen Timmons; her beloved husband William; her darling daughters Tannas Mike (Robert) and Trenise; her treasured sisters Betty Barr and Jeanetta Hill (Johnnie); her cherished grandsons Robert Mike IV and Winston 1.nd a host of sorrowing family and friends.
