Ralph Long Jr. began his life journey on April 29, 1930 in Athens, Georgia. He was the second oldest of seven children (Mary, Norris, Farris, Melvin, Hattie, and Mattie) born to the late Ralph Long Sr. and Oree Barnett Long. He spent his childhood in Athens. He attended Chestnut Grove Elementary School and graduated from Athens High & Industrial Schools on June 27, 1950. He joined the Armed Services in March 1951 where he saw combat in the Korean War. He was decorated with a Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal w j 2 Campaign Bronze Stars, and the UN Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 21,1956.
Ralph's journey led him to love and the start of his own family. He married Juanita Mitchell on June 26, 1955 and they established their home in Atlanta. To this union was born three children-Roy, Katrinia, and Karen. Ralph also received his Radio & Television Servicing License from Midway Television Institute of Georgia on January 3, 1956. In 1959, Ralph began thirty years of service with the United States Postal Service.
Ralph is perhaps best described as loyal, protective, stem, faithful, and sensitive. He was a faithful servant as Deacon at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. He was also committed to keeping family connected by actively helping plan reunions for his mother's familyThe Bametts. He also initiated the Long Family Reunion in 2006 to honor the offspring of his parents. He wanted to make sure that the younger generations did not forget the importance of family.
Ralph was happiest when his family was gathered together. He found great joy in watching his family grow to include six grandchildren (Raymond, LaShawne, Jonathan, Jessica, Rachel, and Matthew) and four great-grandchildren (Alexis, Tyree, Sophia, and Sebastian).
Ralph ended his journey on earth on April 24, 2010. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 54 years, his three children, his three brothers, two sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ralph will be missed but we are grateful that he has begun his eternal journey with God.
