--------- Brick Mason, Police Officer, Brewton City Councilman, Scout Master, Coach, Community Leader, Newspaper Distributor, Country Club Manager of Grounds and Maintenance, Supervisor of Outside Cart Crew, Reformed Church of America Deacon, AME Zion Church Trustee, Veteran, Husband, and Father------departed this life on July 14, 2008 at the age of 83 . The only child of Albert Lewis and Essie Curry Lewis; Jake was reared in the Pea Ridge Community of Brewton, Alabama.
After graduating from Southern Normal High School, Jake enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II in the Tank Division commanded by General George Patton. Upon the completion of his military service, he enrolled at Tuskegee Institute and earned a degree in the two-year brick masonry program.
Jake began his masonry career as an independent contractor. Then he joined Hines Realty Company where he became a fixture for 35 years. While working at Hines Realty, he joined the Brewton City Police Department as a part-time police officer. After retiring from brick masonry, he accepted appointment as a full time police officer where he earned the rank of Lieutenant and retired with a total of 35 years of service. While serving on the Police Force, Jake demonstrated his willingness to exceed his assigned responsibilities to serve the community by recruiting and mentoring new Police Officers.
For several years, Jake also managed an early morning newspaper distribution route, which created work opportunities for the local youth. Additionally, he served as coach as well as a scoutmaster for young men within the local area where he taught and instilled principles that helped these young men to become positive and productive citizens within Brewton and other cities.
In 1996, Jake was elected to the first of his three terms on the Brewton City Council. He served the 4th District where he became the catalyst in achieving various infrastructure improvements for the residents of the city and his district.
Jake' s work life actually began at the age of eight when he would perform odd jobs at the Brewton Country Club under the guidance of his uncle, Walter Curry. His association with the Club would span more than 70 years as he performed in various capacities.
Jake' s Christian life began when he was a young man. His Christian service was extensive as a Bergan Memorial Reformed Church of America Deacon and as a Trustee at Zion Fountain AME Zion Church.
The footprints of Jake Lewis' walk through life are reflected not only by his works but also etched by the positive impacts he had on the lives of the many people that he encountered. The beauty of his life is that his testimony will continue to be told by the people that he has touched long after his departure. Most will agree that Jake was a man of few words, but that his presence was unmistakable. The fact that a man who was able to embrace his self-confidence with humility and without arrogance could have lived such an exemplary life shows what a great architect our God is.
Jake was preceded in death by his daughter, Gail Denise Lewis. He leaves to rejoice and celebrate the memories of his life: his faithful wife for 58 years, Ethel Jewel Lewis, daughter: Kimii (Rufus) Felder, son: Walter D. (Rena) Lewis, grandsons: Kenny (Melissa) Felder, John Walter Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Joseph Lewis, granddaughters: Shannon (Ric) Clark, Kristin Lewis, Kirsten Lewis, Christiana Lewis and six (6) great-grand children: Maya Jewel Felder, Karson Felder, Koen Felder, Kannon Felder, Jaden Clark, Christian Clark and several relatives, in-laws, nieces, nephews, dear friends and a host of "Daddy Jake ' s" surrogate children.
