The Lewis family wishes to express appreciation to the entire Columbus Community, the Medical Center, especially the 8th Floor ICU staff, Dr. Harden, Ms. Ross, Daidre, Dee, Ms. Queen, the Progressive Funeral Home staff, and all who assisted the family in our mother's transition. For your unwavering support and accommodation, each act of kindness, each handshake of understanding warmth, for the cards, calls, gifts, and thoughts that have helped to make the burden lighter. We, the family, thank you and thank God for you. May He ever richly bless and keep you.
An old man, going alone highway, came, at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim; the sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, and built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near, "You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; you never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide - Why build you a bridge at the eventide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head: "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today, a youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm, that has been naught to me, to that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; good friend, I am building the bridge for him.

Our earliest memories of you , Mother, are made up of very special feelings ...feelings of warmth , safety, and contentment - And we know it's because you were always there taking good care of us.
As we grew older, we remember how you encouraged us because you knew what we were doing, even when we didn't. We remember times you comforted us over disappointments or a sadness, and how happy you would be for us when things were going well. We remember how you listened patiently to our ever-forming thoughts and ideas, but most of all, we remember you - wise , helpful, caring ....always believing in us and loving us.
Mother, we remember so many things about the past ~ the many things you used to do that showed how very much you cared . We remember all the times your patient hands helped and comforted us when we needed you. We remember how your eyes twinkled with pride and happiness at some small success of ours. We remember all the things you taught, all the guidance you gave us - and how we always knew that you were the best Mother of all.
You taught us so many things - to trust ourselves, to understand right from wrong , to believe in God and in the joy afamily brings...but above all, you taught us about love -that it means giving of yourself, and allowing others to give in return.
Now that we 're older, we understand how well you have loved us, the hours you spent worrying, the sacrifices you made for us. The little things you always did to make our lives happy.
Now that we are older, we understand so much more about life - and we are thankful to know what it means to be loved by awonderful Mother like you . During all those years, Mother, you surely had a heart full of hopes and dreams and special longings of your own, and yet you 've always listened and shared our dreams, our wishes, and our heartaches as if they were the only ones in the world .
That takes a lot of love, Mother, and we understand that now. We hope you realize how much gratitude we have in our hearts for you .. .and how much we 've always needed you in our lives. We really counted on your way of knowing what we were trying to say when we had trouble finding the words.
You always restored our faith in good things and good people. You taught us to enjoy the bright spots in each new day, with and by prayer and thanks be to God. You helped us smile when we might have shedded tears instead.
We love you so much Mother because you understood so well, cared so deeply, comforted so gently and shared so beautifully - but most of all, we love you because you were you.
Your faith in God,friendship and faith in us have helped us to find our way in life, and to this we give thanks be to God, for His grace and mercy and thanks be to You and Daddy for being humble and obedient to: "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6 and "He that spareth his rod hateth his son but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." Proverbs 13:24
WE LOVE YOU, YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

At 3 P.M. on December 10, 2007, God in His infinite wisdom opened Heaven's gates and called His faithful servant home to be at rest in the Lord.
Affectionately known by many names to her family, friends and acquaintances as "Sister," Aunt Sister,
Aunt Ozeal, Sister Lewis, Momma Lewis, G-Momma, Ozie, Ms. Ozeal, Baby and Obie, all signify her love for all mankind.
The third of ten (10) children born to Jimmy and Emma Washington-Scott in Chattahoochee County, Georgia on June 15, 1918.
Ozeal was united in marriage to the late Elijah Lewis, Sr. in 1935 and to this union was born ten children: Lillie , Eddie, James (deceased) , Sylvester, Elijah Jr., Martha, Sandra, Ozeal, Lloyd (deceased) and Michael.
Ozeal accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She was a faithful member of Mount Sinai Primitive Baptist Church where she was the "Mother" and a committee sister. Her devotion to the church was unmatched and truly a blessing. She served the church and mankind with the zeal , zest, love, humility and knowledge that exemplified a time well spent, a race well ran and a work well done.
Ozeal was given the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to carry out the many talents which included sewing, cooking, taking care of children , taking care of family and the community. There was not a dish she could not cook nor a fashion she could not sew. She endeavored to help any and all in need , no matter who you were. She was always a beacon of light, a listener, a confident and had a resolution to any situation before her. Ozeal was the strength and source of inspiration to her family and to the Washington Scott family reunion . Her love was unleashed and seemed endless. She touched the life of everyone who knew her. Everyone who came in contact with her remembered her beautiful smiling face, calmness and the response of wisdom that surpassed your immediate understanding.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons and nine siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted sister and brother-in-law, Veola and Charles Jordan of Boston , Massachusetts; a brother-in-law, Willie Lewis of Birmingham , Alabama ; eight (8) surviving children and their spouses, Lillie (the late Clarence), Eddie (MacMorris), Sylvester (Cathy), Elijah (Ann), Martha (Joe), Sandra (Vincent),
Ozeal (Richard), and Michael (Michelle); thirty-five (35) grandchildren; forty-seven (47) great grandchildren; three (3) great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The legacy of her 89 years
cannot be summarized in writing but it will always be in the hearts and minds of all those she touched.

After a restless night of prolonged, labored breathing, tossing and not eating, mother opened her eyes to a beautiful Monday morning, sunlight abound with IVs accommodating. Mother dozed off and on and the task for her four daughters was to keep her body temperature down. Intermittently through out the previous two days, Momma would ask for by name, her children, grandchildren and Elijah. She asked us to put on her stockings, shoes and hat and she wanted to verify that we had put them on. When asked where she was going, Mother replied, lito church. ..let's go!"
Lillie, Martha, Sand and Tea continued to talk to Mother, who indicated she heard our voices by nodding her head. Then the four of us started singing songs and hymns of blessings and praises while Martha repeated the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm. Peacefully, Mother made her transition with an angelic grace... Heaven 's gates opened up and welcomed her home.
