Bishop Lawson was a devout Christian, having accepted the Lord as his personal Savior as a boy and began his christian ministry in 1932 and was ordained in 1934. In 1938, Andrew Lawson became pastor of Jerusalem United Holy Church of America, Inc. of Reidsville, North Carolina, where he recently led the congregation in building a $300,000 Church. In 1944 he succeeded the late Bishop Henry L. Fisher as pastor of Gospel Tabernacle (now Fisher Memorial United Holy Church of America, Inc.) where in 1956 he led the congregation in constructing the present edifice with an education department and Day Care Center. Beleiving that one should actualize his potential, Bishop Lawson attended elementary and junior high school at Boydton Institute, Boydton Virginia and the Frederick Douglas Hig~ School in Baltimore, MD before receiving a high school diploma from Hillside High School, Durham, NC. In 1945, Bishop Lawson received the B.A. degree from Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC and in 1948 the B.D. degree from Shaw University School of Religion, Raleigh, NC. For seventeen years, he taught and served as Dean and then President of the United Christian College, Goldsboro, NC and received the Doctor of Divinity degree from this college.
For outstanding work with countless numbers of ministers and christian workers and after developing and presenting a theological dissertation, Bishop Lawson was awarded the Master of Divinity degree from Shaw University in 1971. Bishop Lawson was not only a successful and beloved pastor but was also endowed with the administrative ability which the United Holy Church of America, Inc. leadership recognized and endorsed. In 1960, he was elected Junior Bishop of the Church and was consecrated Bishop in 1961. That year he was also appointed Bishop of the Youth Department of the United Holy Church of America, Inc., a position he held until his death.
