After the clouds, the sunshine, after the winter, the spring, after the shower, the rainbow, for life is a changeable thing. After the night, the morning bidding all darkness cease. After life's cares and sorrows, the comfort
and sweetness of peace. -Helen Steiner Rice

Edna Ruth Lawrence was born in Atlanta on July 28, 1931 to Clara M. Smith and Murphy Brinkley, Sr. Her name was chosen to honor her grandparents Edgar and Ruth Smith. Edna Ruth was adopted as a baby and raised by her beloved parents Georgia Brinkley Lawrence and Bud Lawrence. She was their only child.
Ruth was educated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and David T. Howard High School, Later she attended The Beaumont School of Nursing. She married Harold Cargile and to this union was born one daughter, Gloria Ann Cargile. After a career as a private nurse, Ruth worked at Scripta Pen and Pencil Factory, then later at Sears before retiring to care for her terminally ill mother, affectionately known as Mama Georgia.
Ruth was an active and devoted member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church before joining Big Bethel AME Church. At Big Bethel, she was a faithful and dedicated member on Usherette Board # 1.
Ruth was very social and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. The last few years she resided at QLS Village for senior citizens where she was a very active participant in community activities. She also enjoyed spending time at the Darnell Center for Seniors.
