Vivian Malone Jones, the fourth child and eldest daughter of Willie Malone and Bertha Davis Malone, was born in Vredenburgh, Alabama on July 15, 1942. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Mobile, Alabama where Vivian attended elementary and high school. Vivian enrolled at the University of Alabama in 1963 after learning that the segregated university that she attended was threatened with losing its accreditation. It was. this event that created the historic "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door'' by the late Governor George Wallace. Vivian Malone Jones became the first African American graduate of the University of Alabama in 1965. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by th~ University in August, 2000 and was honored as one of its most outstanding graduates.The University of Alabama has endowed ascholarship in her name and her portrait hangs in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. While at the University of Alabama, Vivian met her future husband the late Dr. Mack A. Jones. They were married for thirty-eight years. To this union, two children, Michael Anthony and Monica Alicia were born. Vivian has made Atlanta her home since 1969. Professionally, Vivian spent her entire career fighting injustice- for the Justice Department in Washingtor:T, . D.C. and later as the Director of Environmental Justice for the Environmental Protection Agency in Atl9,nta.4 She was also named the Executive Director of the Voter Education Project, a nonprofit agency, aimed at educating and empowering the disenfranchised. Vivian was active with the NAACP, Leadership Atlanta Alumni Association, National Council of Negro Women, The Dogwood City Chapter of the Links, Inc., SCLC Women , and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was a longstanding member of the Auxiliary to the Atlanta Medical Association where she served as President. She was also the first recipient of the Pillar of Strength Award presented by the Auxiliary. Most recently, Vivian had been involved with the 100 Black Men of Atlanta to assist with establishing a brain trust to address pressing issues relevant to the African American community. Most importantly, Vivian has always been a woman of great strength with an abiding faith. She accepted Christ at an early age and worked tirelessly to preserve those ideals throughout her life. She was a devout member of From the Heart Church Ministries where she remained active in many capacities until the end of her life. Vivian made her transition on October 13, 2005. She is survived by her children, Michael Jones (Tabitha) and Monica Jones-Shareef (Anthony); siblings, Elvin Malone, Sr. (Verna), Clinton Malone, Sr. (Cheryl), Charles Malone, Joyce Phillips, Gwendolyn Moseby (Bernard), Margie Tuckson (Reed), and Sharon Malone (Eric); grandchildren, Mishaun, Amber, and Kasiem; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Willie Jones, Roosevelt Jones, Elouise Mitchell (Carl), Flora Wright, Katie Jones, and Gloria Jones; numerous other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
