Essie Be "Honey" Jones was born June 12, 1913 in Hurtsboro,
Alabama to the late Rayphel and Susie Mae Jernigan, one of seven children: Marvis, Essie Mae, Shield, Seal, Steel and Garfield. Essie Be would tell you that she found Jesus at age twelve and joined Ht.n1:s Chapel A.M.E. Ou.trch with other family members.
In the early 30's she fell in love with the handsome, dashing and most charming Walter Winkfield (who later became the ordained Rev. Walter Winkfield) and born into this union was a daughter. She was Essie Be's only child and they named her Essie Mae, after Essie Be's sister. After struggling through the depression, Essie Be departed to Atlanta, Georgia (with Uttle Essie May) and Walter went North to Chicago, illinois for a better way of life. In 1945, she moved to Columbus, Georgia and married Lewis Jones (who preceded her in death).
She joined the 24th Street Baptist Church In Columbus and through her faith, prayer and devotion, she served as a missionary worker, sung in the Senior Choir and formed the "Happy Land Singers" of Columbus, Georgia. They became members of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Inc., president and founder was the late Mr. Thomas A. Dorsey. Essie Be Jones traveled with Mr. Dorsey and Choruses, Inc. all over the United States and Canada. She stirred many souls when she sang Mr. Dorsey's renowned songs: ''Precious Lord, Take My Hanel." Oh what a time it was when she marched down the isles, followed by her Happy Land Singers. lbe saved and unsaved alike would shout: "Sing Essie Be... Praise God! Sing Essie Be,
Praise the Lord!!"
Returning to her roots in 1986 with failing health, she moved to Decatur, Georgia with her daughter and son-in-law. She joined Turner Monumental A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Pastor, Rev. Dr. M.L. Hood. She served as a member of the Down Home Club, Missionary Society and an honorary member of Stewardess Board #l. Essie Be was loved by all who had the honor to meet her... this little lady with the winning smile and big gospel voice. She worked as a laundress to educate her daughter and never forgetting her sisters and brothers children. She never made a difference between them and her own (Little Essie Mae).
She went to her eternal rest on Saturday, July 29, 1995 at 9:45A.M. after a long illness. Left behind to cherish her sweet spirit in memory is one brother: Mr. Garfield Jernigan; her only child: Essie M. Long, son-in-law: Donald Long; three grandsons: Leon LaStarza, LaFayette Rufus, and Lorenza Louis Hall; five great grandchildren: Christopher Troutman Hall, Essie Nicole Hall, Essie Zeline Hall, Margaret Starza and Leon LaStarza Hall, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including two special friends: Mrs. Ida Horton and Mrs. Fanny Mae Ragley.

Don't grieue for me, for now fm free ... I'm foiiowing the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call... I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day .. . To laugh, to loue, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way.. . I found that peace at the close of day.
If my parting has left a uoid ... Then fill it with remembered joy. A friend shared, a laugh, a kiss ... Ah, these things, I too, will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow.. . I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much ... Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief... Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me... God wanted me now, He set me free.

Keep on Keeping On, Turner!!!!
