BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Edward Allen Jones was born in Indianola, Mississippi, on November 10, 1903. He received his elementary education in the public schools of Indianola, and in 1918 he enrolled in the Morehouse Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy in 1922, he entered Morehouse College, where he received the B.A. degree as Class Valedictorian in 1926.
Dr. Jones continued his education at Middlebury College, where he received the M.A. degree in French in 1930, and ;tt Cornell University, where he earned the Ph.D. degree in the same field in 1943. Dr. Jones also studied at La Sorbonne, the University of Paris, and the University of Grenoble.
Dr. Jones began his teaching career at Morehouse in 1927 and was a Professor at the Atlanta institution until 1977. From 1930 until 1977 he served as Chairman of the Department of Foreign languages, and from 1970 to 1977 he held the Fuller E. Callaway Chair in French. At the time of his death he was serving Morehouse as Director of Institutional Research.
An outstanding scholar, Dr. Jones was Editor of the College language Association Journal
from 1977 to 1978 and President of the College Language Association from 1950 to 1952. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and served on the Qualifications Committee of that scholarly fraternity.
Dr. Jones was appointed by Senegal's President Leopold Sedar Senghor as Honorary Consul to Atlanta and Georgia in 1970. He is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Colored America, Directory of American Scholars, Who's Who Among Black Americans, Outstanding Educators of America. Contemporary Authors, and Men of Achievement.
The official history of Morehouse College, A Candle in the Dark was written by Dr. Jones and was published in 1967. He is also the author of Voice of Negritude, mor than thirty articles, and numerous book reviews. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Morehouse College Bulletin for 37 years.
Dr. Jones was a world traveler. He went to Europe on ten occasions, visited more than a dozen African countries, and on several occasions toured the Caribbean. While in West Africa in 1960 he directed an American and Canadian work-study group in Operation Crossroads Africa, and in 1963 he was an Operation Crossroads Africa Area Director in French-speaking West African countries. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of European Studies and Coordinator of the Merrill Junior-Year-Abroad Program at Morehouse College.
Dr. Jones was very active in civic affairs. He was President of the Grand Jurors Association of Fulton County in 1979 and Chairman of the Executive Committee of that organization in 1980. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of Atlanta and also was Chairman of the Board of Deacons of the First Congregational Church of Atlanta.
Dr. Jones is survived by his wife, Dr. Virginia L. Jones, who is Dean of the Atlanta University School of Library and Information study; sons, Dr. Edward A. Jones, Jr. and Carl H. Jones, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sisters, Mrs. Ernestine Allen, Gary, Indiana, Mrs. Ann Ayers, Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Carrie Young, Decatur, Georgia, and Mrs. Viola Gambler, Westport, Connecticut, and one brother, James Saunders, Chicago. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
