Mills Emanuel Johnson was born on December 19, 1952 in Savannah, Georgia.
As a young child Mills and his family moved to New York City and later to Newark,
New Jersey. He began his education at Hawthorne Avenue Elementary and
Weequahic Senior High where he excelled in academics and as a member of the
wrestling team and chess club. He graduated in 1971 and received a scholarship
to attend Winston Salem State College in North Carolina. After his first year he
transferred to Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He obtained a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and Biology, graduating from Rutgers in
1975. Mills later earned a Masters Degree in Education from Cambridge College
in Boston, MA.
Following his graduation from Rutgers, Mills moved to Florida and began his
teaching career at Miami Central Senior High School. During this tenure he met his wife, Linda. Mills later began teaching at Miami Springs Middle serving as the Department Chairperson of Science. After teaching in Dade County Schools for many years, Mills moved his family and career to Atlanta, GA. His first position in
Georgia was as the Chairperson for Holcomb Bridge Middle School's Magnet
Program. Mills continued teaching at McNair Middle School where he wrote and helped develop the Ronald McNair Space and Science Program. He worked closely alongside McNair's family to develop the program in honor of the fallen astronaut. The program was later adopted by the State of Georgia and now
operates nationally. Mills continued his career at Benjamin Banneker Senior High, where he persistently developed and refined curriculum standards. After teaching
in Georgia for 16 years, he returned to Florida where he taught at Parkway Middle and Highland Oaks Middle schools, challenging and developing young minds.
Mills was "Called Home" on the morning of September 8, 2008, while doing what he loved, teaching. Mills instilled his beliefs of kindness, love and good character
in his family, friends, students and all who met him.
Mills was the second eldest child of Margaret Johnson. He grew up in the folds of Wells Cathedral Church of God in Christ in Newark, N.J. Mills was married to
Linda Arnold on June 21, 1980. He and Linda proudly raised three sons together. . Mills was a dedicated father and was truly a family man. His accomplishments and . influence inspired his entire family to reach higher and fulfill their dreams; his sons,
brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews alike.
He leaves to mourn a wife of 28 years, Linda Johnson and three sons, Darron of Atlanta, GA, Armond and Mills Jr. of Miami, FL. Mills also leaves three grandchildren, Tyra, Darron Jr. and Amina. He is survived by five siblings; Rosaline Evans
of Miami, FL, Tyrone Johnson of Pahrump, NV, Melinda Johnson of Miami, FL, Darryl Johnson of Folkston. GA and Daniel Johnson also of Miami, FL. He was preceded by his mother Margaret Johnson and sister Wendy Johnson. Additionally, he is survived by Aunts Edith Hunter, Mary McCloud, Dolores Brown, Unde William Brown, his mother-in-law Mother Fannie Arnold, three sisters-in-taw: Doris Arnold and Jannie Richardson of Miami, FL, and Carmelia Johnson of Pahrumpa, NV; two brothers in-law; Kenneth Arnold and Alvin Richardson of Miami, FL, and a host of
loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
