Mrs. Greeta Valeria Reid Johnson was born on February 10, 1931 to Mr. and Mrs. James (Mary) Reid. She was the seventh of eleven children born to this union.
Greeta lived throughout her life in Atlanta and was a product of its public schools. She graduated with honors from Booker T. Washington High School. Having received an academic scholarship, she attended Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University).
Greeta was married in 1949 to her first sweetheart and love of her life, Clarence Roosevelt Johnson. Their special union was rewarded by three (3) adoring children: Valerie Belinda, Anita Marie and Clarence, Jr.
In addition to fulfilling her role of wife, mother and part-time employee, Greeta continued her education at night at Atlanta Business College and Blayton School of Business and Accounting.
Greeta became fully employed by the Phyllis Wheatley Y.W.C.A. as Receptionist/ Clerk. After a short while, she was promoted secretary to Mrs. Sujette F. Crank, Executive Director. Greeta's continued work experiences included secretary to Mr. William W. Allison, Executive Director of Economic Opportunity Atlanta, Inc. (EOA); followed by secretaryj administrative assistant to Mr. Marty Nance, Executive Director of the Urban Residential Finance Authority of the City of Atlanta (URFA).
During her employment, she received several citations and awards including "Outstanding Service to EOA" and "Employee of the Year in Administrative Services." While at EOA, Greeta also worked in the Finance Department as Employee Benefits Specialist, and as Planning Assistant in the Grants and Records/Planning Departments. She assisted in proposal writing and review, budgeting, and funding sources compliance.
Greeta was a lover of baseball, football, bridge and Bid Whist. She was a staunch supporter of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons. At various times, she was a member of the Gorenettes, L'Jets, and Fair Ladies Bridge Clubs. Other affiliations included the Jewels and the Jadettes Social Clubs, and the Atlanta Secretarial League. She was a charter member of the Atlanta Business Women's Association, Golden Dome Chapter (ABWA), and was a former member of ZETA Amicae.
Greeta accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She was baptized at age 13 into the West Hunter Street Baptist Church. She was a member of the Youth Choir and served on the Junior Usher Team. Adult affiliations included the Senior Usher Board, Deaconess Board, and the Altar Guild/Decorating Committee. She served on various committees for Homecoming and Church Anniversaries, which included Finance, Membership, Program and Decorating.
In 1985, Greeta transferred her membership to the Ben Hill United Methodist Church, where she continued to worship faithfully. Until declining heath, she served as a member of the Christian Doorkeepers Usher Team, Communion Stewards, and was active with the United Methodist Women's organization. Until her demise, she maintained active membership in the Jewels and Partners Ministry. She looked forward to their annual Spiritual Retreats at Epworth by the Sea at St. Simons Island and other Jewels and Partners functions.
Greeta loved Ben Hill Church and was excited about her completion of several Bible classes: "Women in Search of Excellence (WISE)," (initiated and taught by her daughter, Valerie), "Virtuous Woman," "Living God's Way," and "In God's Presence." She also completed Part 1 of "Disciples: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study." She tried to live by the principles and teachings of their studies.
Greeta was a "Virtuous Woman of God," and an "Extraordinary Lady." Her inner strength was unbelievable, and "her faith in God was unequaled by any man or woman," as she was so lovingly described by her dear sister, Elizabeth.
On September 18, 2011, our Lord reclaimed His Gift He lent us. Greeta was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah C. (Marie "Chick") Belton; both daughters: Anita Johnson Gray and Rev. Valerie Johnson Earvin; two of her four sisters: Alcee Reid Davis and Sallie Reid Jones; all six of her "Reid Clan" brothers: James Alonza, Rollin Lamar, Jesse Melvin (Doughbelly); Thomas Wilbur (Peter); Vernard Chappell and Rev. Clarence Carzell.
Greeta lives joyfully in the hearts of her devoted husband, Clarence of 62 years; her loving son,
Attorney Clarence R. Johnson, Jr.; three caring grandchildren:
Victor (Amanda) Gray;
William Jarrett (Tamesha) Earvin, Sr.; Allyson E. (Michael) Richardson; and four precious great-grandchildren,
William Jarrett, Jr. and Crista Samone Earvin, Alexandra White and Earvin Alexander Richardson.
Also to cherish her memories are her loving and devoted sisters: Elizabeth Reid Stamps and Marynette Reid Bolden; five wonderful "God-given daughters": Janice S. Smith, Constance G. Moore, Thea A. Fenner, Amelia Tucker-Shaw and Carol Clarke Wesley, and a "God-given grand daughter", Joiet Wesley.
Greeta also leaves to celebrate her life: son-in-law Dr. Larry L. Earvin and special friend, Lisa Menzies; two sisters-in-law: Ramona R. Reid, Lucille W. Reid, and a host of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Because of Greeta's love and affection for others, many referred to her as "Momma Greeta," Mama J, Mama Johnson; Ms. Greeta, Ms. "J", Momma, Granny G and Granny.
She will be greatly missed by many and will be remembered always.
She leaves a legacy of love.
