Shirley Ann Jelks was born
July 2, 1946 to the late Douglas
Jelks and Louise Hilda Smith Jelks, the oldest of 5 girls. She graduated from Charles E. Sumner High School in St. Louis and was a 1968 graduate of Spehnan College, Atlanta, GA. She later earned a Master's degree in Urban Planning from Hunter College, New York City, and an MBA in Business Applications from New York Institute of Technology, New York City.
She joined Antioch Baptist Church of St. Louis and later was a member of Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, New York. She was married for a decade to Alexander Harrison.
Shirley worked as an Urban Planner for the City of Newark, NJ, Chicago, IL and retired from the New York Transit Authority in 2001. She worked as a substitute teacher in New York City. Since 2001, she worked as a census enumerator for the United States Census Bureau.
While in high school, Shirley was a member of the National Baptist Convention Youth Choir under the direction of the late Grace Taylor. She sang with the Spelman College Glee Club while in college. She was a life 1nember of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College. Her passion was working on political campaigns. She worked on Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
She leaves to mourn her n1other, Mrs. Louise H. Jelks of Atlanta, GA; her sisters, Joyce E. Jelks of Atlanta, GA; Kayle S. Jelks of St. Louis, MO; Sheliah Jelks Ozier (John) of St. Louis, MO; adopted sister Nicky Hill of Dallas, TX; five nieces and nephews and 13 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Jelks, and sister, Sandra Lorraine Jelks.
