Jonathan Jackson, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 6, 1930, the only child of Alberta Brown Jackson Davis and the late Jonathan Jackson. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and graduated from David T. Howard Senior High School. Dr. Jackson received an A. B. from Clark College, an M. Div. from Gammon Theological Seminary and an M.A. in Christian Education from Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee. He then received the Danforth Grant from Boston University, where he was awarded the Th.D. degree in Theology and Higher Education.
Dr. Jackson dedicated his life to academic service, education and the ministry and taught, counseled and touched thousands of lives in his professional and pastoral careers. At the beginning of his career, he served as Student Pastor of Ladd Street Methodist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, Pastor of Warren Temple Methodist Church, LaGrange, Georgia, and Interim Pastor of Pond Street Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island. He later served in college ministry, both at Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina and at his alma mater, Clark College.
In 1971, Dr. Jackson began his thirty-one-year tenure at the Interdenominational Theological Center (lTC) as an Associate Professor of Christian Education. In 1973, he was promoted to full Professor and Chairperson of the department. He retired from the Chair and from teaching in 2000 and became a Director of Faith In the City, a collaborative communityfocused ,faith-based project at lTC and the Candler and Columbia Theological Seminaries . Additionally, Dr. Jackson served as an instructor in the Lay Pastors' School of Emory University for twenty-eight years.
Dr. Jackson was service-oriented and was in constant demand as a speaker and facilitator of workshops throughout the country. He was an elder of the United Methodist North Georgia Annual Conference and was the recipient of numerous awards. His board memberships included Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, Inc., Wesley Community Center for the Aged, Rural Life Center, Hinton, North Carolina, West End Medical Center and Hillside Center School of Ministry. He also was the author of several publications, including books, book reviews, interview articles, and audio and videotapes.
Dr. Jackson is survived by daughter, Jennifer C. Jackson of Brooklyn, New York; mother, Alberta Brown Jackson Davis of Atlanta, Georgia; cousins , Sharon Smartt Osby (Andrew), Debbie Davis, Belinda Hunt (Dexter), Rosalyn Smartt and Edwenda Smartt, all of Atlanta, Georgia, Grace Harvey of LaGrange, Georgia, and Esther Ruth Harvey of Thomasville, Georgia.
