Obituary
Carleton Lester Inniss was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 30th, 1924 to Eloise and Carlton Inniss from Barbados, West Indies. During the height of the depression, Carleton contracted polio and lost the use of his legs for a full year of his childhood. Without money for taxi fare, Eloise lovingly carried 9 year old Carleton in her arms each week to physical therapy appointments more than a mile away. Guided by faith, God's grace and selfdetermination, Carleton regained the use of his legs in just one year.
Carleton's tenacity revealed itself in his passion for music as well. At an early age, Carleton exhibited a keen interest in classical music and began learning piano and singing in the church choir. Carleton, once again, transcended polio when he decided to study the pipe organ (pedals and all), launching his first steps towards a 55 year phenomenal career in music. A consummate scholar, Carleton graduated from Brooklyn College with a major in French and a minor in Music in 1946. He later received an M.A. in Music Education from Columbia University Teacher's College and an Associates Degree in 1960 from the American Guild of Organist. With over 70 credits beyond a Master's degree, Carleton continued to broaden his knowledge mastering the flute, spanish, computer programming and African music. One of the many highlights of his musical career was Carleton's participation in a summer seminar on African Art and Music in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria.
For years no-one could distract Carleton from his love for music until one fateful day when Gloria Schumpert whisked into the room at a friend's party. At first sight, Carleton knew in an instant that he had found his soulmate. In 3 short months they were engaged and one year later married. To one another, Carleton lovingly referred to Gloria as "Schump" for "Schumpert" and she called him "Shug" for "sugar''. Born out of their love were the "Inniss" girls, who he affectionately called Debbie (Borah), Julia (Foodle) and Carla (CG).
Carleton's gift of music crossed racial and geographic boundaries. He was a music teacher at Francis Lewis H.S. in Queens, NY for 33 years. During these years, he also served as Minister of Music at Siloam Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, New York where besides playing the organ and conducting the choir, he presented many organ recitals and choral concerts with orchestra, performing works from the great choral literature throughout the New York area. One of his most notable musical accomplishments was the Siloam Presbyterian choir's popular performances of the Missa Luba Congolese Mass in Latin and his original arrangements of Negro Spirituals. The choir also recorded 3 albums under his tutelage.
In 1989, Carleton and Gloria relocated to Atlanta, Georgia joining their eldest daughter. There, Carleton presided as the Music Director at Hillside Presbyterian Church in Decator and also acted as volunteer director of the Bell Choir for Quality Living Services (QLS), Senior Citizen's community center. In 1998, one of Carleton's lifetime dreams came true when three of his spiritual arrangements were published by Carl Fischer, nationally renown music publisher. For over 30 years, Carleton has been a proud and active member of the American Guild of Organists and served as the Dean of the Queens chapter. Carleton was exceedingly proud that, except for his recent hospitalization, he had never missed playing a Christmas Eve service in 57 years!
Carleton's legacy is in the sounds of sacred music filling churches, living rooms, grandchildren's instruments, hospital floors and even doorbells. His intellectual brilliance will be remembered by our unceasing reliance on his editorial assistance and vast encyclopedic knowledge. His demand for excellence will be recounted in his uncompromising insistence on perfection in all his endeavors and from everyone around him. Leaving a legend of sacred religious music from Brooklyn to Atlanta, Carleton was a living inspiration that anything is possible with hard work, high standards and a higher power. Just recently, his historical contribution to the arts and cultural life of Brooklyn is a part of an exhibit at the Marriot hotel in Downtown Brooklyn.
On January 12th, Carleton was carried home on the wings of angels. Tonight, he orchestrates this concert from above as he directs us all, especially his leading soloist, Gloria, to stand tall, sing his elegy joyfully and give thanks and praise to God for all of our many blessings. Shug, Daddy, Brother, Papa Carl, Grandpa, Maestro, Renaissance Man, Mr. Inniss, Uncle, Cousin...... today the "Word of the Day" is you.
Left to rejoice in his memory are his loving and devoted wife for 49 1/2 years, Gloria Inniss; 3 daughters, Deborah Inniss of Atlanta, Julia Richards of Queens and Carla Harris of California; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Leslie McDonald of Brooklyn; son-in-law, Kwasi Harris of California and future son-in-law Rukuumba Nedd of Trinidad; 7 grandchildren Locksley, Lauren and Jonathan Richards of Queens, Kai Sinclair of Atlanta, and Kimathi, Johari and Assata Harris of California; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; choir and church members from Siloam and Hillside Presbyterian churches, and countless family and friends.
Lord Touch Me (one of Carleton's favorites)
Lord, I want you to touch me. Touch me with Thy holy love. Lord, come down and touch me. Come down from heaven above.
Lord, reach out and touch me. Reach out and touch me within. Lord, let goodness touch me. Thy touch will cleanse me from sin.
Some folks want treasures of silver and gold, Some want to reign with powers untold; But in my life all that I can say,
Lord be my guide and have Thine own way.

Carleton
Inniss, 74,
organist who
played classics
By Kay Powell
STAFF WRITER
For seven years, the energetic classical organ music of Carleton Inniss, 74, of Atlanta filled the sanctuary at Hillside Presbyterian Church in Decatur.
He was thankful to have Inniss found an appreciative audience for his classical music in a culture moving more to gospel music, said his wife, Gloria Inniss.
. The memorial service for Mr. Inniss, who died Tuesday, will be at 7:30p.m. today at Hillside Presbyterian Church. He died of heart failure at Gambro Dialysis Center at Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University. The body will be cremated. Murray Bros. Cascade Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
A 30-year member of the American Guild of Organists, Mr. Inniss "came from the Brahms-Bach era and that's fading," said his wife. "Everything in Atlanta has gone gospel. At Hillside, there is a nucleus of people interested in his kind of music, the requiems."
Mr. Inniss' spiritual service for organ solo was published in 1998 by Carl Fisher music publishers. The work is based on three spirituals, "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me," "There Is a Balm in Gilead" and "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel."
"That's a showy thing with a lot of pedal work," said Mrs. Inniss.
Mr. Inniss majored in French at Brooklyn College in 1946, $poke the language fluently and read novels in French. "When we would visit French-speaking countries, they always thought he was a native," said his wife. He earned a master's degree in music education from Columbia University and studied tousie in Mrica.
Hospitalized during the holidays, Mr. Inniss was upset that it was the first time in 53 years he had not played a Christmas service, said Mrs. Inniss. With the hospital's permission, his family brought in a keyboard and Mr. Inniss presented a con.cert of Christmas music for the patients in the renal division at Crawford Long Hospital.
Mr. Inniss moved to Atlanta in 1989 from Queens, N.Y., where he taught high school music and had been minister of music at Siloam Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Deborah Inniss of Atlanta, Julia Richards of Queens and Carla Harris of California; a sister, Elsie McDonald of Brooklyn; and seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1655 Tullie Circle, N.E., " Atlanta, GA 30329.
