Mary Sallie Clark-Hughes, also known as "Mother Hughes," \vas born on December 8, 1913 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia to Annie and West Clark. She has been a dedicated and vital community activist \Vorking throughout the country attempting to bring about social and economical reform in the lives ofmany disadvantaged people.
This ambitious and detennined woman maintained full-time employment during the day while attending Booker T. Washington High evening school. She not only graduated with honors as the valedictorian, she was awarded a scholarship to Atlanta's Morris Brown College but chose to further her
career in the field of nursing by enrolling in the Bennett School of Nursing. She ~aduated with outstanding honors and was also the recipient of the award for The Most Outstanding Student Ukely To Succeed. She took the Georgia State Licensing Board Examination for Licensed Practical Nurse in 1964.
Mrs. Hughes has been a widow for many years after the passing of her first husband, Herbert Bridgewater, Sr. This union gave rise to one offspring, Herbert Jeremiah Bridgewater, Jr. Later she married Lowell Hughes who passed away in 1978.
Mary Sallie Hughes has been an active member of the Mount Zion Second Baptist Church since 1942 She faithfully served on many committees, auxiliaries, clubs and boards.
She was well-known in the Atlanta community for her generosity. She spent more than 78 years giving a\va} clothes and shoes to local homeless shelters and fu-e victims, volunteering at soup kitchens, starting scholarships for young people, donating money to the underprivileged children and so much more. birthday she would give away a box for every year she lived_
