11God is our refuge and our strength. A very present help in the time of trouble."
Lurene Nolan Bowens Hughes was the oldest child of the late Darnell Lindsey Bowens, Sr. and Irene Bowens. She was born and reared in Waycross, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Darnell Lindsey Bowens, Jr., and her husband, Reverend Dr. Christopher C. Hughes. "In the midst of life we are in death."
Lurene accepted Christ as her personal Savior as a young girl at Gaines Chapel A.M. E. Church in Waycross, Georgia. She was active in the Church Youth Department, and served as the church organist. Lurene attended the Public Schools of Waycross and graduated from Center High School. She matriculated and graduated from Georgia State College (now Savannah State University) with a Normal School Teacher Education Certification.
Lurene met and married her college sweetheart, Christopher C. Hughes of Montgomery, Alabama. They enjoyed a long and loving life together. After graduation from Georgia State College, Christopher and Lurene taught in Troup, Ware, and Walton Counties.
Reverend Hughes received the call to pastor New Hope A.M. E. Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Together Reverend Hughes and Lurene relocated and made their home in Atlanta. Lurene enrolled and graduated from Morris Brown College earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She later enrolled and graduated from Atlanta University with a Master of Arts in Education, and the Professional Degree in Public School Administration and Supervision.
Lurene returned to Walton County as a Jeanes Supervisor in the Public Schools, where she was employed for many successful years. Lurene came to the Atlanta Public Schools as a teacher at E.P. Johnson Elementary School and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School as a math teacher until she retired.

Lurene was a devout member of Turner Monumental A.M. E. Church. She served as Directress of the Y.P.D. and President of the Down Home Club. She was a member of the Stewardess Board, the Missionary Society, the Trustee Board and served as an advisor for the original C.C. Hughes Choir.
Lurene was active in the sixth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church, where she held membership in the Ministers Wives Alliance. She was a coordinator for the many Georgia State Conferences of the A.M. E. Church, and was in great demand as an accomplished orator speaker for Womens' Day in the sixth Episcopal District. She was a warm, and congenial person and met no strangers. Her legacy is one of great accomplishments.
She leaves to cherish her memory her nephew, Leonard L. Bowens and his wife, Hildyne Bowens, of Hempstead, New York; her extended family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Price, Raynard (her God son), Harlecia and Nikki of Atlanta, Georgia. The very special neighborhood friends, John C. (Jake) Wright and Debra Wright, Theodore Scott, and her long church companion, Edna Lewis, all of Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by a host of cousins and friends.
We loved you Rene and will miss you, but God loved you best. Take your rest.

Somewhere the sun is shining, somewhere the song-birds dwell, Hush, then, thy sad repining, God lives, and all is well.
Somewhere the day is longer, somewhere the task is done, Somewhere the heart is stronger, somewhere the guerdon won
Somewhere the load is lifted, close by an open gate, Somewhere the clouds are rifted, somewhere the angels wait,
Somewhere, somewhere, beautrful isle of somewhere! Land of the true, where we live anew, Beautiful isle of somewhere!

Dear Rene,
It is a most tedious task saying farewell. As you know, I never liked saying good-bye. You were always of the same persuasion. Therefore, I will say love and farewell.
You were always the Ultimate Aunt in sharing your goodness to me. I still remember when you presented me with my first Trombone in the ninth grade. My first grown-up watch - a Bulova - for my birthd~y. You and Hughes were always so wonderful to me.
As I continue down memory lane, I remember you funding my lessons and finding my organ teachers, Mr. Talmadge Anderson and Mr. Graham Jackson.
As I remember my days at Morris Brown College, you encouraged me to strive for excellent grades and goals. You journeyed to Hempstead, New York to see me take the vows of marriage, and your many visits to visit my wife and I in Hempstead.
I am eternally grateful for everything that you did for me. You .were always a mover and a shaker. I shall find solace in the wonderful memories. You were and will always be a jewel. The aunt extraordinaire.
Love and peaceful rest,
Your Nephew Leonard L. Bowens (Sonny)
