Edna Chestnut Holland was born January 7, 1920 in Alma, Georgia to the late Sarah Hampton and Gary Clark. She was raised by Pattie Chestnut from a very young age after her mother passed.
Edna was educated in the Atlanta public schools and was employed at Grady Memorial Hospital for 38 years and eight months (She would always say, "Don't forget the eight months!"). After retirement, Edna was employed by the Sellers Brothers Funeral Home as a hostess for 18 years.
A strong Christian woman, she gave her life to Christ at an early age. Edna joined the West Hunter Street Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Bowen where she served on Usher Board #1 over 30 years. A willing worker, no task was too large or two small when it came to helping others.
Edna was a strong-willed independent woman who never waited for anyone to do anything for her. She took care of her own affairs up to age 86 and even though she never learned to drive, she still went anywhere she wanted in Atlanta by bus or train . Her legs were her car and she was always on the go. Her favorite words were "Let me do my thing . I need to exercise my legs."
Wherever she went, she brought a warm spirit and sense of humor to others and she never met a stranger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton , and her sister, Inez. Edna Holland is survived by her most devoted daughter, Carolyn Whatley, who for six months only missed visiting her mother four times in the hospital during her illness. Edna's heart was her only grandson , Warren , Ill , whom she adored. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, the Whatley family, cousins, and frien ds.
"May I Go?"
May I go now? Do you think the time is right?May I say good-bye to pain filled days and endless lonely nights? I've lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be. So can I take that step beyond and set my spirit free? I didn't want to go at first. I fought with all my might. But something seems to draw me now to a warm and loving light. I want to go. I really do. It's difficult to stay. But I will try as best I can to live just one more day. To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears. I know you're sad and afraid, because I see your tears. I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know that my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go. Thank you for loving me. You know I love you too. That's why it's hard to say good-bye and end this life with you. So hold me now, just one more time and let me hear you say, Because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today.
