Th01nas William Hinds, devoted husband, loving father, exceptional educator and friend, passed on October 30, 2013. He was born in :Mobile, Alabama on :March 17, 1913 to Stann1ore _Hinds, Sr. and 1v1amie Jenkins Hinds. Thomas was the second of three children. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stanmore Hinds, Jr. and his sister, Vera Hinds Edwards.
Thomas received his Bachelor of Science degree in Automotive Mechanics in 1940 fr01n Ha1npton Institute (now University) in Hampton, Virginia; received teaching certification fr01n National Institute of Dry Cleaning; received Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education in 1958 from Savannah State College in Savannah, Georgia; received Nlastcr of Education in 1964 from Colorado State University. He earned many other certifications and recognitions.
Thomas was a dedicated educator who taught at Carver Vocational High School day and night. He taught veterans Auto I\1echanics and senred as the Veterans Affairs Coordinator. He taught Dry Cleaning during the day. He set up and taught I\1achine Shop. He served as the Industrial Arts Coordinator at Carver and then at..A.rcher High School andAtlantaArea Technical School (now Atlanta Technical College)
Thomas was the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Atlanta University for five years. He started the Hinds Lawn Care Service which he operated for five years.
Thomas loved work of all kind. He loved being an educator, guiding, developing, encouraging and believing in his students' abilities, helping them reach their full potential. He was stern, fair, funny, caring, and an excellent role model to everyone. He taught 1nore than vocational skills, he taught and exemplified skills for successful living. He was a father figure to many, a mentor, and a friend.
Thon1as was a men1ber of Big Brothers of America and mentored 1nany during his service with the organization. He was a 4th degree K_night of Columbus where he once served as Parlimentarian. He was a devoted member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church where he served as a Lecture and on the hospitality committee.
Thomas enjoyed working in the soil and with his tools by building or repairing any"thing and everything. He was meticulous about safety, organization, and cleanliness of his work areas. He enjoyed shooting pool and ruled his table.
Thomas was respected in his c01nmunity, humble yet 1nany sought his cm.msel on professional and personal1natters. He was trusted as a n1an of integrity.
Th01nas loved his wife, Grace Whatley Hinds. His college sweetheart who he affectionately called "Brownie" or "Georgia Peach" was also a dedicated educator. They married on June 19, 1941 and shared seventy-two beautiful years.
Thon1as is survived by his wife, Grace \Vhatley Hinds; daughters Sylvia Hinds Reid and Vera Hinds Plummer (Bentley); grandchildren, Christopher Reid, Niichael Reid, Carlton Plrunmer, Ginger Plummer; great-granddaughter, Lillian Grace l\1Iair; and other living relatives and friends.
