CELEBRATION OF LIFE OF

Sunrise: February 26, 1918

Sunset: April1, 20 17

My Grandmama Grace gave 100 percent in supporting every dream I ever had. She was forever encouraging my goals and dreams. On the flip side, she was forever correcting my articulation. We were never allowed to use slang. Her daily mantra was, "Make sure you drink your eight glasses ofwater a day." -Christopher Reid
My granny's legacy is greatness. She gave her all to everyone not just to family members. You don't see that in too many people. She tutored my best friend and me when I was in the ninth grade and gave us assignments and snacks after school. She even taught me how to write a check. My granny was my best friend at times. She brought out the kindness in you to make you sweet. Grandmama was great. - Michael Reid
I recall vividly when I was attending school at Collier Heights Elementary in Atlanta and had an assignment for Black History Month. The project I chose was to create a poster of several influential leaders. Grandma provided high level guidance and the right amount of discipline in the development and completion of the project. She really helped shape my approach to endeavors and to be thorough. I've always admired her approach to education and learning. Miss you dearly with love, Grandma! ! - Carlton Plummer
I can hear her voice clearly, justas I did when I was 8 years old. She would call me into the dining room for Sunday dinner...Ginnie Cakes!" she would shout. I see her face clearly just as I did when I was 12 years old. Beautiful almond skin with wavy, fine black hair slicked back as she sat in the kitchen on her favorite chair peeling an apple for me with her fast moving slender fingers. I can feel her today watching over me and her great grandchildren like the angel she's always been. I love you Grammy and you will always be in my heart. - Ginger Plummer Mair

Grace Amanda Whatley Hinds was the third oldest child ofPlemon Leon Whadey, Sr. and Mattie Jo Settles Whatley of Milner, Pike (now Lamar County), Georgia where she was born February 26, 1918. Surrounded by aloving family ofcarpenters, blacksmiths, farmers, and teachers, Grace learned early on the family creed of faith in God, education, and land ownership. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Milner where she also attended its one-room elementary school. The church school was on land donated by her grandfather, Jacob Whadey who was an independent farmer and freedman. From avery early age, Grace was zealous for education. When their father couldn't give them a ride, Grace walked 10 miles with her brothers to Cabin Creek High School, a private four-year high school for Negroes established by the Cabin Creek Baptist Association, in Griffin, GA. She was a member of Cabin Creek's last senior class, and then went on to earn an associate degree in education from Fort Valley State College, and a Bachelor ofArts degree in education from Hampton Institute (now University) in Virginia.
It was at Hampton that Grace mer the love of her life- the affable and quite handsome Thomas William Hinds of Mobile, Alabama. The two graduated from Hampton in 1940 and on June 19, 1941 they established a loving marriage that lasted 72 years until Thomas passed in 2013 at age 100. After graduation from Hampton, Grace began her life long career as an elementary school educator serving in both rural and urban schools in the South. She was a first grade teacher, librarian, and assistant principal at English Avenue Elementary School, the principal of Finch Elementary and later principal of Center Hill Elementary School until her retirement from the Atlanta School system. Serious about education and preparation for her career, Grace attended numerous professional workshops, earned numerous teacher and adminisn-a:tive certifications, and spent seve1-al summers attending Columbia University In New York City where she earned the M.A. degree in education.
Throughout her life, Grace was a phenomenal caregiver to any and to all. She fully embodied the meaning ofhcr name "Grace" - God's unmerited favor and loving kindness. Grace made herself available to those in need bygiving ofher time, prayers, and resources. Over the years she was the primary caregiver of her mother, an aunt, and cousin, even while still helping friends and neighbors. Grace was one of the most loving, generous, selfless, caring women of character one could meet. She was welcoming to everyone, as all who met her knew. She never met a stranger, just a new friend who she embraced and had a genuine interest in. Grace thrived on hearing new perspectives and new experiences. Once she had a nonspeaking role in the TV series "I'll Fly Away." Grace was an excellent organizer and administrator who developed a vast network of cherished, nusted, lifelong friends who all knew each other. Grace and Thomas were faithful members of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church of Adanta where they were among the first couples awarded the coveted Trail Blazer Award for Life Time Achievement. Grace was active in a Catholic prayer group and travelled with them ro conferences and spiritual reneats. She was a woman offaith and devotion to God, always seeking an understanding of the Bible's teaching to apply them in her life. Tmly committed to her family, education, and community, Grace organized the first Whadey- Mann Family reunion.
Grace took great joy and care in encouraging excellence among her children and g1'a11dchildren, her nieces and nephews, and her students. She challenged them ro think ahead, be prepared for an opportunity before it is even available to them. 11 Be ready, think ahead, 11 she demanded. Grace, ofcourse, loved and doted on her four gTfmdchildren. She loved each one ofthem the best, giving each a special nickname.
Grace departed tltis life on April 1, 201 7 at her home in Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her parents, four brothers -Plemon, Jr., Wanen, Sr., Charles, Sr., and Henry, and one sister Lucy.
