"Because We Were Sisters"
Because we were sisters, We shared a precious bond. We have childhood memories
To laugh at, Silly stories to retell, And secrets we kept safe. Because we were sisters, We understood each other
In a special way And truly appreciated The gifts of friendship
And family. Because we were sisters, We helped during the hard times, Shared in the good times, And were there for each other
Always.

Mrs. Carol Ann Hawkins Heyward, the youngest of six siblings, was born on December 10, 1949, in Jackson, North Carolina to the late Virgie Lee Boone Hawkins and Robert Lee Hawkins. God called her to eternal rest on Friday, May 28, 2004, as she lay in Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, GA surrounded by her loving family.
At an early age, Carol joined St. John A.M.E. Church where she was a faithful member for many years prior to moving to Baltimore, l\10. Upon her return to North Carolina in August 2003, she began to renew her relationship with her church family and to take an active role in helping to fulfill the church's mission. Carol attended the public schools in Northampton County (NC) and graduated in 1968 from Willis Hare High School in Pendleton, NC. A popular student, Carol excelled academically and participated in a variety of activities, including the cheering squad.
Upon graduation from high school, Carol attended Elizabeth City State University, where she graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in business education. Carol was a devoted alumna who served her alma mater as a member and officer in the John H. Bias Alumni Chapter in Baltimore, r.JD, the Elizabeth City Local Chapter, and the National Alumni Association. It was on a journey of support for Elizabeth City State University and her fellow alumni that she became ill and slipped away suddenly to be in Heaven. At the time of her death, Carol was serving as the director of Alumni Relations for her beloved university.
Before returning to her alma mater, Carol had spent 24 years of her professional career at Bell Atlantic Corporation (Verizon) in Maryland, after which she worked as a cu sterner service manager at CORE, Inc. and as a secretarial manager at the law firm of Venable LLP in Baltimore, Maryland.

An avid reader, Carol was known to read two or three books a week. She was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed traveling with her family and planning for family gatherings.
Carol leaves to cherish her sweet memory: Her husband, Nathaniel Heyward whom she wed in 1973; her son, Sean Heyward ofNew York City; her daughter, Nikki Heyward of West Palm Beach, Florida; three brothers: William L. "Brother Sister Hug"
I've seen My Sister crying I've seen her heart in two I've seen when she is hurting And when she's down and blue. She sometimes needs someone special To give her Heart, a gentle Tug, But then sometimes all she really needs Is a great big Brother's hug. God has taken you with him now You'll forever be in our hearts.
