!J/.t;J. 6}/~da~ ~__e ~ui6 ~ulr4v was born to Charlie and Alethia Lewis in Statesboro, Georgia on
June 23, 1955. She graduated from Marvin Pittman High School in 1973 and then attended South Georgia College in Douglas, Georgia. In 1975, she attended Swainsboro Technical College where she received her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) diploma.
Wanda joined Brannen Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age. She was active in several ministries, including being the Director of the Youth Choir. In 1975, she met Bernard Hendrix, Jr. They were joined in holy matrimony on April 17, 1977; born to this union were two children, a daughter, Chatyne Sharee and a son, Bernard III.
As the wife of an Air Force Serviceman, she supported her husband in traveling throughout the United States. "Mom," as her children affectionately called her, always reminded them to "love your brother and take care of your sister." Wanda was blessed with one grandchild, Chatanesia (Scooter), the apple of her eye. "Grammy," as her only grandchild called her, was an active part of her granddaughter's life . She never missed "Scooter's" dance recitals, choir concerts, and school events.
Wanda was passionate about being with family, saving coupons, shopping, singing, going to the theatre, decorating and gourmet cooking. She could recreate a meal without the recipe and took great pride in the presentation of her dishes. She would often say "it's all in the presentation."
Wanda began her professional career in the mid 70's as a LPN at Bulloch Memorial Hospital in Statesboro, Georgia in the neonatal unit. As a dedicated, devoted, and gifted nurse she provided excellent care to her patients. Wanda was known for her faith in God and would often pray and sing to her patients -her own form of faith sharing. She worked at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. In Anderson, South Carolina, while working at Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital, Wanda found her passion in caring for mental health/substance abuse patients. Her calling led her to work at G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, Columbia, South Carolina; Georgia Mental Health Institute, Atlanta, Georgia; GRN Community Service Board, Snellville, Georgia; and Cobb & Douglas County Community Service Board, Smyrna, Georgia.
In 1994, Bernard and Wanda moved to Atlanta and shortly thereafter joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Differently Abled Ministry, the Health and Welfare Ministry and the Majestic Choir. She enjoyed reading the Bible and expanded her knowledge by attending Bible studies.
Although she spent most of her time in church activities, Wanda was a member of the National Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was extremely adamant about exercising her right to vote - and strongly encouraged others to vote.
She leaves a loving, supportive and devoted husband of 36 years, Bernard Hendrix, Jr.; her daughter Chatyne Sharee Hendrix; her son, Bernard Hendrix III; her grandchild, Chatanesia L. Hendrix; her mother, Alethia Lewis, Statesboro, GA; her father, Charlie Lewis Sr., preceded her in death; four sisters Le'Ontyne Buggs and Charlene Lewis, Clinton, MD, Reta Jo Lewis, Washington, DC, Sharma D.
