Obituary
Mr. John Henderson transitioned from this life on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Decatur, Georgia. In his 89 years he has successfully fought many illnesses in his body without complaining. He knew how to fight the good fight. He was born on December 29, 1925, in Smithville, Georgia. At the age of four, his mother Sylvia relocated to Youngstown, Ohio with her four children, Beatrice Rosie, John, and his two younger siblings, Effie, and Charles (all of whom are now deceased).
In 1944, John joined the United States Army and fought in World War II. On returning home he began his education at Youngstown University. He met Juanita Jarvis and was married. Through this union he had three daughters: Stephanie (Lavesta) Washington, Denise (Robert) Howze, and Juanita Marie Swain, who preceded him in death. As his family grew he left school and was employed for over 30 years with U.S. Steel. Once retired he was quick to tell you, "U.S. Steel paid me to work and I did, now they pay me not to work so I don't!"
Like his younger brother, John became a passionate motorcycle rider and a member of the "Afro Dogs" motorcycle club of Youngstown. He was a member of the Masons and the local VFW, where he served as Chaplain. He helped care for his mother Sylvia Pilson until her death. He was an avid Bible reader and would read it in its entirety yearly.
John moved to Fayetteville, Georgia in 2003, and was introduced to Redemption Fellowship by a family friend, Joan Mills. He developed a fondness for the Church and for Pastor Mike and Renee Higgins. He maintained his love for the Church until his death.
His weakness was his sweet tooth, which his grandchildren were well aware of, but his strength was his sweet spirit. When they went missing on visits to Opa's house, you would always find them in his room. John was known to be the first to arrive at every neighborhood party and the last to leave. He was truly a community man and a man of many communities and will be missed by them all. He is survived by two younger brothers, Albert Lateef, and Acey Pilson, two daughters, 7 grandchildren, Benjamin Henderson, Catherine, Christiaan, Taylor, and Clarence Swain, Arielle and Ava Howze. Seven great-grandchildren, Eve and Chloe Henderson, Damonte' and Aziah Willingham, Laquan, Lyriq and Karter Williams, sisters in love, Marlie Byrd, and Leola Henderson, nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of family.
