OBITUARY
Columbus Holland Hartwell was born on February 2, 1941 to Holland E. and Myrtle Beatrice Hartwell. He was the third of seven children. Both of his beloved parents passed away only months prior to his own untimely death.
Reverend Hartwell received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Texas Southern University. After teaching elementary school in Houston, Texas for several years, Reverend Hartwell went on to a istinguished career in business. For 37 years he worked for mM, first as a sales representative, then as a marketing manager, moving on to Wall Street as branch sales manager, and ultimately as the Director of Workforce Management, a branch of ffiM dedicated to minority recruitment, employee education, and socially conscious investment. He continued in his commitment to education and community service when he retired from IBM in 1997, becoming President of Communities in Schools of Atlanta, a leading student retention program. In all of these pursuits he used his accomplishments as a foundation for helping others.
In 1992 he answered the call to the ministry, serving as Associate Pastor at Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church, Marietta, GA. Following Turner Chapel, his first pastorate was Saint Stephens A.M.E. Church, Scottdale, GA. In March 1997, he became Senior Pastor at First Saint Paul A.M.E. Church in Lithonia, GA. At First Saint Paul, he built a strong congregation through preaching love and forgiveness. He was also Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Will-Mariah Christian School, a ministry of First Saint Paul.
Those who knew him and loved him-and the two usually went together--will remember him for the exceptional person he was. People meeting him for the first time quickly realized they were in the presence of a person of extraordinary character. Columbus Hartwell exuded a powerful love that was immediately noticeable and that did not discriminate or play favorites. His love came from deep within him. It was anchored by his love of God, his love of all men and women, and his commitment to forgiveness. A man of poise, balance and grace, he had a robust pride, while at the same time being remarkably humble.
He is survived by a large family who loves him dearly: his wife, Ida Hartwell; his son, Reginald A. Hartwell; his daughter, Stephanie Hartwell Mandella; his son-in-law, Jason A. Mandella; his brothers, Thomas and John Hartwell, both of Houston, Texas; his four sisters, Myrtle "Peggy" Hartwell Wilborn ofAnaheim Hills, California; Vivian Hartwell Miller of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; JoAnn Hartwell and Madeline Hartwell of Houston; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and c~untless friends.
