Mrs. Maggie J. 9larris was born April 16, 1908 to the Rev.
Benjamin and Mrs. Emmie Lee Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Harris passed to a better life on January 3, 2011.
Mrs. Harris grew up in the Atlanta area and went to Ashby Street Elementary School, now known as Kipp Ways Academy. Losing her parents at a very early age, she and her sister Mary made their life together as best they could.
Mrs. Harris later married Lewis Harris and from this union Mary Louise and Eugene were born. Left to raise her children alone and discovering as a toddler, Eugene had contracted Infantile Paralysis, Mrs. Harris prayed without ceasing for God to heal her son and when he did, she said GOD DID IT. She consistently kept her children in God's care.
Mother Harris also held several jobs during her working career to support her children and their education. Her love for children kept her working in the childcare field. Fulton Bag Day Care and Little Lambs Daycare (Eugene Harris, owner) are examples.
Mrs. Harris joined Big Bethel AME Church and was baptized with her young daughter by Rev. J. T. Babcock. Mary visited Ebenezer with friends several times and liked the music so well that she joined. Eugene followed shortly thereafter. Mother Harris was not happy with this, but she accepted it.
When Rev. and Mrs. King, Sr. took these singing children under their wings, she decided that anyone who was good to her children was alright with her. She then joined Ebenezer and was a member of the April Birthmonth Club, the Hines-Rogers Missionary Circle, and the Mission Study Class until her health began to fail.
Mother Harris was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Minners. She leaves to cherish her memory: Daughter, Mary Louise Gurley; son, Rev. Eugene Harris; godson, Bennie Bride; grandson, Elbert (Jennifer) Gurley, Jr.; great-grandson, Elbert (lman) Gurley, Ill; great great granddaughter, Gabrielle Willow Gurley, one niece, Annie R. Minners, and all of her extended Ebenezer Family.
