Obituary
Odessa Lee 'M.atfiews 1]-{arre(( died peacefully on October 31, 2014 at her home, after a very
brief illness. Odessa was born April 27, 1933, the daughter of Jesse Mathews and Mattie L. Porter Mathews. She attended Jones Central High school in Greene County, Georgia where she was raised with five brothers and one sister. She was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church in Madison, Georgia where she was baptized.
Odessa thoroughly enjoyed reading, learning and experiencing nature. She was gentle, kind, full of life and had a warm smile that would brighten up any room. After graduating from High School she attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. She later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she began her career as an insurance salesperson with North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company. She joined St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta, where she was an active member and volunteer.
In December of 1961, Odessa married the love of tier life Ellison Harrell Sr.. They raised three children, one of whom preceded her in death. She was a very devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a great cook and was known for baking delicious caramel cakes. Odessa began a second career as a supervisor with the State of Georgia caring for mentally and physically challenged residents at Brook Run in Dunwoody, Georgia. She served in this capacity for over 20 years.
After retirement Odessa moved back to Madison, Georgia with her devoted husband of 53 years. There she enjoyed the serenity and beauty of the land where she was raised.
Odessa was preceded in death by her youngest son Carl Mathew Harrell, and two brothers, Clifford Mathews and Willie James Mathews. She leaves to cherish the sweet memories of her life: her husband Ellison Harrell Sr.; one son, Ellison (Vanessa) Harrell Jr., Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Dorotha Alisa Harrell, Jonesboro, GA; one sister, Bertis M . Post, Atlanta, GA; three brothers, Jessie (Verna) Mathews, Altamonte Springs, FL; L.C. (Mardella) Mathews, Southfield, Ml; Herbert (Nora) Mathews, Los Angeles, CA; two sisters-in-law, Annie Whithly and Jacquelyn Lindsey, Atlanta, GA; one granddaughter, Elisa Ivory Harrell, and grandson Ellison Harrell Ill, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.
