Rev. Gabriel S. Hardeman Sr. is the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. A.D. Hardeman. The Rev. G. S. Hardeman Sr. was born in Kathleen, Georgia, September 8, 1913. He moved to Atlanta, Ga. when he was seven years old. He was called to preach at the age of 13 and was known all over Georgia as the "boy preacher". He eventually received his B.A. Degree from Morris Brown College in 1945 and later a Masters of Divinity from Turner Theological Seminary. He also holds a Doctor Of Divinity Degree from the Baltimore Bible College.
Rev. Hardeman was licensed to preach at Cosmopolitan A.M.E. Church in 1928. In 1930, he was ordained an Itinerant Deacon and was appointed that same year as pastor of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Shady Dale, Ga. by Bishop W. A. Fountain. He was seventeen years old at that time. Bishop Fountain ordained him as an Itinerant Elder in 1932 at Big Bethel AME.
Rev. Hardeman has served as Chief Secretary of the North Ga. Conference, the Atlanta Ga. Conference, and the Atlanta North, Ga. Conference. In 1989, Bishop John H. Adams, appointed Rev. Hardeman Presiding Elder, over the West Atlanta District, where he faithfully served for eight years.
As a pastor in Georgia, he was appointed to the following AME churches. Mt. Zion, Shady Dale, Ga. Rock Temple, Conyers, Ga. All~n Chapel, Calhoun, Ga., Greater Bethel, Athens, Ga., St. Luke, Cartersville, Ga., Mt. Zion, College Park, Ga. , here is where he entertained the Atlanta, Ga. Conference. He served also at Turner Chapel, Marietta, Ga., Trinity, Atlanta, Ga., Turner Monumental, Atlanta, Ga., St. Paul, Macon, Ga. and Greater Turner Chapel, Atlanta, Ga.
Rev GabrielS. Hardeman Sr. is the founder of Hickman Temple A.M.E. Church on Philadelphia, PA." While in the Mother District, he served as pastor of Waters Memorial A.M.E. , Philadelphia, Bethel A.M.E., Church, Camden, N.J., Ruffin Nichols A.M.E., Philadelphia, St. John A.M.E., Wayne, Pa., Monumental A.M.E. Steelton, Pa., Ward A.M.E., Philadelphia, Pa. and Elmwood Community Methodist ,Philadelphia, Pa.. Rev. Hardeman was also the Dean of Gospel Crusade Bible College in Philadelphia.
As a Presiding Elder he was featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution in September 6, 2003 as the "Iron Man In the Pulpit" by staff writer, Bo Emerson. Both Rev. Hardeman and his wife were featured in the married couples section of Jet Magazine, November 28th 2005 edition.
In 1937, he met Daisy M. Johnson while they were both students at Morris Brown College. In 1939 Rev. Hardeman married Daisy Johnson of Athens, Ga. They have been married for 67 years. Mrs. Daisy M. Hardeman is a retired school teacher from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania School System.
Rev. Hardeman's favorite hobbywas gardening. He also loved to play the piano and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever he went. His advice to all was to love the Lord Thy God with all your heart, your soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. His most favorite used scripture was Psalm 103: 1 & 2. "BLESS THE LORD, 0 MY SOUL; AND ALL THAT IS WITHIN ME, BLESS HIS HOLY NAME! BLESS THE LORD, 0 MY SOUL, AND FORGET NOT ALL HIS BENEFITS."
His most cherished gift or award was the 1992 Humanitarian Award presented to him at the Sixth Annual Awards Luncheon by the Women of Morris Brown College.
Rev. Hardeman is survived by wife Daisy M. Hardeman; son Rev. Gabriel S. Hardeman, Jr., daughter-in-law, Annette Guest Hardeman; grandson, Michael Gabriel Hardeman; adopted son, Rev. Ellis I. Washington, (wife Nathine and daughter Keturah); sister-in-law Betty Hardeman, of Daytona Beach, Fla., (Betsy Hardeman, Blanche Hardeman, & B.A. Hardeman, Jr.); Blanche, Michael and Harvey Hardeman of Albany, Ga. (children of the late Willie & Georgia Hardeman); The Johnson and Neeley families of Athens, Georgia, The Guest Family of Atlanta, plus a host of nieces, nephews, sons and daughters in the Christian ministry.
