"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." "'Proverbs 31: 31
Dorothy Iris King Handy-White (Dot) was born on June 16, 1928 in Cranford, NJ. She was the second of five children born to the late James A. King and the late Hattie Bauknight King. On August 22, 2016 in Covington, GA, God called Dorothy home to rest.
As a young child she was baptized at St. Marks A.M.E Church in Cranford, NJ, where she remained a member into young adulthood. Dorothy then joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Rahway, NJ where she raised her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and was an active member of the Missionary Board, under Pastor Allen Thompson.
Dorothy received her formal education from the Cranford School System. After graduating from high school in 1946, she met and married the late Eugene H. Handy of Rahway, NJ on September 27,1947. From this union six children were born: Eugene Marlin, the late Evette Regina-Gloria, Dorothy Deborah, Benjamin Morris, Eric Allen, and James Edwin. Dorothy held a couple ofjobs to ensure the health and welfare of her children. Dorothy was also dedicated to making a home for her family, raising, and instilling in them love for God, family, respect for others, respect for self, independence, honesty, loyalty, and hard work. In the mid 70's she began working for Merck Sharp and Dohme, from where she later retired in 1990.
Dorothy later married, the late Elmer White in June of 1988. They were friends, companions, travel buddies, card players, and even shared an occasional round of golf until his death. Dot loved her Missionary duties, as well as cooking, crocheting, reading Baldacci, Grisham, and Patterson books, and watching General Hospital. What she cherished most was the love of her family and friends. Where she was able to enjoy this love was, 1237 Whelan Pl. Over time Whelan Place evolved and grew as the family did. For the 63 years that Dot made Whelan Place home, it was not only her home but it was where family members came when in town, where friends from all generations came to hang out, have dinner, cookout, and just sit on the front step or out back on the deck. When the door opened she was greeted with a hey: mom, grandma, sister, aunt Dottie, Ms. Handy, or Mrs. White.
In May of 2014 Dorothy moved to Covington, GA to be closer to and spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In July 2016, Dorothy officially became a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Covington, GA under the ministry of Reverend George P. Lanier. Dorothy's legacy of loving God and family will continue to live on for generations.
Left to cherish Dorothy's sweet memories, are her five children: Eugene (Yvonne) Handy ofDelaware, Dorothy Handy, Benjamin (Cynthia) Handy, Eric (Pamela) Handy and James (Stephanie) Handy; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two brothers: Charles (Mary) King of New Jersey, Charles (Barbara) Peterson; two sisters: Lynn (Nelson) Carey ofNorth Carolina, Merle Thomas of Massachusetts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
