THE REVEREND DOCTOR RALPH DAVID ABERNATHY, Pastor -Officiating-

Otis Thrash Hammonds was a devoted son, kind brother and loving friend to so many. In a special kind of way, he was a life, long worker for social justice and human decency wherever he found himself. It just happened that Otis found himself in many places during his life, time.
Dr. Hammonds was born March 5, 1929 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the oldest of four sons born to the late Mr. Avery Hammonds and Mrs. Elnora T. Hammonds. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he grew up.
Dr. Hammonds' father passed during his early youth, leav, ing the head of the household upon his dear mother. During this time, young Otis proved to be an excellent pillar of strength in the household, while his dear mother worked hard to make ends meet. Otis proved to be a source of strength to his then aging maternal grandmother, the late Mrs. Missouri Thrash and his three younger brothers, Charles (affectionately known as Jab, who preceded him in death less than six months ago), Harold and Houston.
At an early age, Otis joined East End Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Because of his christian service in the church, he was appointed a delegate to an Alabama Baptist Association. The outgrowth of this experience led to a bright future for him. Dr. William H. Dinkins, a graduate of Brown University of Providence, Rhode Island, who was then the President of Selma University, was so impressed with !(young Otis' "grasp of the Scriptures and his general demeanor as well as his promising future, that he gave him a four, year scholarship to Selma University. Thus opening the door to a bright and beautiful future which he later shared with us. "Little O.T.", as he was affectionately called in the family, received his public education in Birmingham, Alabama and then graduated from Selma University ofSelma, Alabama. He achieved his baccalau,

reate degree from Lincoln University and his medical degree (M.D.), from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1963. During his tenure at Lincoln University as a junior scholar, Mr. Hammonds volunteered for two years and nine months of military service in the armed forces of the United States of America.
Otis moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1966. He was no longer "Little 0. T." but he was now !(Dr. O.T. Hammonds", fully prepared to help heal the sick and administer to the broken hearted through the practice of his chosen profession, medicine. He was chosen as Chief of Staff and later he became the Chief of Anesthesiology at the Southwest Community Hospital. He loved this institution and he loved the practice of medicine. It was his calling, it vas his pulpit and his patients were his congregation.
Dr. Hammonds can be described as a man who shared and cared. This sharing and caring was demonstrated through his devotion to his mother, his family, and the community. He was quiet in words, but loud in action. This was exemplified in the many and various activities in which he was engaged during his lifetime. One example was the interest he displayed in struggling young artists and art groups.
Shakespeare describes life as actors and actresses on stage with scenes and curtain calls. The curtain closed on the beautiful and most meaningful life of Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds on Friday, June 14, 1985.
Survivors who are left to profit from his distinguished career and benefit from his legacy are his faithful and loving mother, Mrs. Elnora Thrash Hammonds of Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, Harold Hammonds of Birmingham, Alabama and Houston Hammonds of Mobile, Alabama; other survivors are nieces, nephews, uncles; a great aunt, other relatives and many friends.
