Life Reflections
Leo Thomas Hale (Ebon Dooley) was born to the union of Leo Hale and Beatrice Midgett Hale in Milan, Tennessee on January 25, 1942. He was the eldest of three children.
He was called home on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at his home in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Thomas was educated in the Milan, Tennessee public schools. After the 1Oth grade he enrolled and graduated from Fisk University in Nashville. He chose to go by the name of 'Ebon' while attending Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was managing editor of the Fisk literary magazine and newspaper. Ebon entered Columbia Law School in New York City as a regional honors scholar in 1963. After graduation in 1967 he went to Chicago .as a VISTA legal volunteer. While in Chicago he joined the OBAC Writers Workshop. In 1968 his book, "Revolution: A Poem" was published.
Ebon moved to Atlanta from Chicago in 1969 to run Timbuktu and Uhuru bookstores, each of which specialized in AfroAmerican works. But his most creative works were in the management of organizations that encouraged artistic and social expression. The following are some of the organizations he was affiliated with: The Neighborhood Arts Center; The Arts Exchange; Atlanta's Radio Free Georgia (WRFG) Community Radio Station, where he served as president of the Board pf Directors among many other positions, most recently Broadcasting Director; The Little Five Points Community Center, the Pan Africa Conference, and the Board of Directors of Pacifica News.
Ebon is survived by his three children: Askia Moshe Hale (Patricia Ann Rose), Anita Ife Hale and Teressa Aiesha Hale (Deborah Hale), all of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Barbara Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandchildren: Vincent J. Hale and Jayla Hale; one niece, Nicole (Kevin) Turner of Atlanta, Georgia, one nephew, John C. (Tonya) Hale of Lancaster, California; and a host of cousins and friends.
