Dr. Richard Carlton Hackney, prominent physician and surgeon of Atlanta, Georgia, passed at 2 A.M. on Wednesday morning, February 7, 1968 at the McLendon Hospital.
Prior to his passing Dr. Hackney had been ill for a year. Because of his health he first limited and later discontinued his medical practice.
Dr. Hackney received the B.S. -degree at Morehouse College in 1931 and the M.D. degree at Meharry Medical College in 1935. He served his internship in S.t. Louis, Missouri at the Homer G. Phillips Hospital, where he was a staff member from 1935 to 1940.
He practiced medicine in Atlanta for twenty- seven years, was a member of the Atlanta Medical Society and the Fulton County Medical Society. He was regarded by his medical colleagues as a brilliant surgeon.
Dr. Hackney was active . n religious and civic life. He was a member of the St. Paul of t he Cross Catholic Church, the St. Paul of the Cross School Board, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a life member of the N.A.A.C.P. and chairman of the Butler Street Y.M.C.A. Membership Campaign from 1965 to 1967. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Kappa Boule, the 27 Club, and many other organizations.
During t he 1967 commencement exercises at Morehouse College Dr. Hackney was one of the recipients of the first Alumni Medals to be awarded by the Atlanta Institution for outstanding achievement. He was selected Man of the Year in Medicine by the Atlanta Medical Society.
Dr. Hackney is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Pruitt Hackney, four sons: Richard, Jr., Wendell, Elbert, and Forrest, and an aunt, Mrs. Rosalie Franklin of Rome, Georgia.
