Roland Gwynn departed Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Washington Hospital Center. He was the youngest child of the late ReverendHarvey Gwynn and Bessie Jones Gwynn of Caswell County NC, born November 2,1933.
Roland attended Caswell County, NC public schools. After his completing his formal education, Roland at the age of seventeen, movedto Washington DC. Roland enteredthe US Army in 1951 and he was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey for his basic train'ing. While on tour in the Army, .he was stationed throughout Europe, including Paris. After leaving active duty, he was transferred to the Army reserve list Roland entered his career as a Federal Government employee with the US Senate in 1958. During his tenure at the US Capitol he had a wonderful career until his retirement in1987.
Ronald's identity was truly developed when hepurchased his first cab in the late 60's. He displayed a special gift for entertaining his passengers as he drove them around Washington, DC Throughout the Cab community he was called "628" or "623". Driving his cab became his own special empire, something Roland grew into a prosperous business. His client list included the "Who's Who" of Washington, DC
Rolandenjoyedtraveling, visiting andentertaining hisfamily in Nortlt Carolina. He was a supporter/organizer of many family reunions and Yanceyville Day.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Gwynn, four sisters, Florence Boone, Zelma Lea, Agnes Graves, and Mary Paylor, andstepmother, Sadie Withers Gwynn.
Memories will be cherished by: his granddaughter, Ashley Te"ell; his daughter, Sylvia Gwynn Terrell; his sister, Fannie Mathis; his devoted niece, Carolyn Gwynn Lewis, sister-inlaw, Rena' Gwynn and a host ofnieces, nephews, and cousins. Others who will miss him greatly includefriends throughout theyears, Ms. Leila Dais, Ms. Lerlean Mitchell, andMs. Ann Jackson and many other good friends.
