CHomegoing Service for ~tfta EJ. Green
The life of Martha Jones Green can best be described as a beautiful, colorful tapestry interwoven with threaded deeds of love, kindness, compassion, courage and goodwill toward family, friends and all those who came to know her. She was also a frrm believer in prayer and trusted God completely to guide her life.
Mrs. Green was born on December 31, 1907 in a small town called Vida, Alabama in Autauga County to Minnie Jones and William Smith. Upon completing her eighth grade year, Mrs. Green attended Stillman Institute in Tuscaloosa, AL where she received her certification for teaching. Mrs. Green completed her undergraduate and graduate education at Alabama State College in Montgomery, AL earning a Masters Degree in education in 1969. Her employment career was expansive and included a lifetime in the educational profession: she spent her earliest teaching career in Irvington, Kentucky with her husband, and returned to Brewton (after a few years) where she accepted a teaching position in the Escambia County School System. She was also known and loved in the Mason Community where she taught, as well. Mrs. Green served as principal for the (then) Piney Grove Elementary School in Brewton, AL for almost 25 years. She retired in 1972 from the county school system.
On December 19, 1936, she was joined in holy matrimony to her beloved husband, Joseph Green; they were married for 62 years. Their blessed union produced one devoted foster daughter, Edna Blanks of Brewton, AL and five biological children: Joseph Green (Mary) of Chicago, IL, Minnie Heath (Robert) of Northport, AL, James Green (Nora) of Chicago, IL, Mary Shakes of Demopolis, AL and Alice Adams (Johnny) of Brewton, AL; 13 grandchildren (Joseph W. Green III, Reginald Heath, Gerald Green, Robert Heath, Jr., Joletta Green, James Green, Jr., Robert Myers, Dallas Green, Shaka Shakes, Martha Adams, Michael Shakes, Shekinah Adams

and Jonathan Turner); 19 great-grandchildren; one foster son, William McGhee; two nephews (one devoted nephew, Henry Chavers); three nieces, one foster sister, Annie Ware; a host of relatives and friends; and several spiritual daughters.
Mrs. Green's retirement did not retire her from active service and involvement in helping others and in the things she enjoyed. Shortly following her retirement, she served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, the local nursing home in Brewton, AL, coordinator of a summer Head Start Program, founder of a Woman's Christian Organization for the enhancement of spiritual growth and a member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Green was also a faithful member of the Bergen Memorial Reformed Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and President of the Women's Guild. Her role in the Guild enabled her to travel regularly on behalf of the Reformed Church. Following the dissolution of Bergen Memorial, Mrs. Green rejoined Zion Fountain A.M.E. Zion Church, where she remained a faithful member until her death.
She enjoyed her gardening and took special pride in maintaining her flowers and potted plants. Mrs. Green was known from California to New York and from Michigan to Florida for her culinary delights and, with her husband, entertained many visitors at their table. One of her favorite hobbies was the preparation of homemade jams and jellies for family and friends. Her children will especially miss her Saturday morning calls to "check on my biddies".
Mrs. Green departed this life on Wednesday, June 12, 2002. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Joseph Green; a beloved granddaughter, Charmin Adams; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Green; a son-in-law Michael Shakes and a grandson, Jeremiah Turner.
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laidfor me I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, to work or play.
Ta ks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close ofthe- day.
ifmy parting ha left a void,
Then fill it with rememberedjoy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Oh yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times ofsorrow, I wish you the sunshine oftomorrow. My life 's been full, I savored much, Goodfriends, good times, my children 's touch. Perhaps my time seem all too brief Don 't lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your head and share with me;
God wanted me now, He Set Me Free.
