Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on the ripened grain. I am the gentle Autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there, I did not die.

Sara Gertrude Milford was born into the loving family of the late Eugene and Leila Milford in Anderson, South Carolina. The third of four daughters (Lougenia and Alyce, both deceased), Sara naturally assumed the "big sister" role over her youngest sister, Leila- a role that many times seemed more motherly than sisterly.
When Sara was quite young, the family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and Sara attended the public schools of the city, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. Although she received a scholarship to attend Tuskegee Institute to pursue a career in nursing, she chose , with parental persuasion, to stay in Atlanta and attend Morris Brown College from which she later graduated . She married Charles Wesley Greene, II (deceased) and to this union was born one son , Milford. A later marriage to Horace Reid (deceased), ended in divorce.
"Banana," as she was lovingly called by her great-grandson, as he hypercorrected his mother who called her "Nana," was typically described as "bossy," "feisty" and "outspoken." All who knew her, however, accepted and admired her frankness , for there was never any doubt at all about her position on any matter.
Another of her nicknames was "Sec," stemming from the fact that she was always secretary for her Family Club. It was natural that the name should apply many years later when she served as secretary for the Atlanta public schools, as well as secretary to the Dean at Spelman College and for the Department of English at Morehouse College.
Sara was multitalented and enjoyed singing, tap-dancing , and acting . She had a beautiful alto voice and once boasted that she was "the best alto in Friendship." Her musical skill was revealed at an early age when she sang and sat on the piano of Graham Jackson, who had played for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As a member of Friendship Baptist Church, she used all her talents in her church work. She was a charter member of the Inspirational Choir and the Friendship Theater Guild. In addition, she was a member of the Adult Fellowship, Deaconess Board , Vacation Bible School , Service Guild , one of four team-teachers of Sunday School Class No. 18, and she wrote articles for The Friendship Mirror, the church's quarterly newsletter.
Along with her talents, Sara possessed a spirit of adventure. She was not afraid to step out and be the first to chart a course. In 1949, she was one of the first black female Traffic Officers for the City of Atlanta Police Department. She organized dance groups at both Stanton Elementary School and John Wesley Dobbs Elementary School, plus a Junior American Red Cross Chapter in the Atlanta public schools.
Sara was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Omega Chapter, which she dearly loved, and she delighted in singing and tap-dancing at AKA functions. She served as a past president of a social club, The Extraordinaires. She frequently remarked that she derived the greatest joy from her family, her singing, her church, and her sorority.
Following a brief period of illness and hospitalization, Sara slipped quietly into eternity on January 7, 2006 with her beloved sister, Leila, at her bedside . She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish countless fond and delightful memories, son, Dr. Milford Wesley Greene (Beverly); granddaughter, Mrs. Kim G. Walker (Kent); great-grandson, Harrison Walker; one sister, Mrs. Leila M. Barfield (Quay); three nieces, Dr. Jeanne T. Meadows (Charles), Ms. Julia Reid, and Ms . Barbara Reid; nephew, Abdul Raheem Aquil; stepson, Horace Reid, Jr.; many other "adopted" daughters and sons, grandnieces, grandnephews, in-laws, cousins, godchildren, and friends.
