The liturgyfor the dead is an Easter liturgy. Itfinds all its meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that
uneither death, nor life, nor angels, nor pn'nct'palities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate usfrom the love ofGod in Christ Jesus our Lord. " This joy, however, does not make human griefunchristian. The very love we havefor each other in Christ brings deep
sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himselfwept at the grave ofhisfriend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearerpresence ofour Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Old Testament Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
The Rev. Doreen Bowery
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for
peace.

Psalm 23 Crimond (Sung)
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want. He makes me down to lie. In pastures green; He leadeth me. The quiet waters by.
My soul He doth restore again; And me to walk doth make. Within the paths of righteousness, E'en for His own Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale, Yet will I fear none ill; For Thou art with me; and Thy rod, And staff me comfort still.
My table Thou hast furnished. In presence of my foes; My head Thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows.
Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me; And in God's house forevermore. My dwelling place shall be.
The Epistle: Revelation 7:9-17
Roslyn Joseph
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and
worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

The Gospel: John 14:1-6 (seated)
Fr. Brian
Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin
Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Prayers of the People (standing)
Dr. Jennifer Friday
For our sister Joan, let us pray to our Lord Jesus Christ who said," I am Resurrection and I am
Life."
Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress; draw near to us who mourn for Joan, and dry the tears of those who weep. People: Hear us, Lord.
You wept at the grave of Lazarus, your friend; comfort us in our sorrow. People: Hear us, Lord.
You raised the dead to life; give to our sister eternal life. People: Hear us, Lord.
You promised paradise to the thief who repented; bring our sister Joan, to the joys of heaven. People: Hear us, Lord. Our sister was washed in Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit; give her fellowship with all your saints.
People: Hear us, Lord.
She was nourished with your Body and Blood; grant her a place at the table in your heavenly kingdom. People: Hear us, Lord.
Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our sister; let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope.

The Commendation
Fr. Brian
Celebrant: Give rest, 0 Christ, to your servant Joan, with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
You only are immortal, the creator and maker of mankind; and we are mortal, formed of the
earth, and to earth shall we retum. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, "You
are dust, and to dust you shall return." All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Give rest, 0 Christ, to your servant Joan with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Into your hands, 0 merciful Savior, we commend your servant Joan. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own
redeeming. Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. People: Amen.
