Don t grievefor meyfor now Vmfree Vm following the path God has chosen for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all. I cotdd not stay another dayy
To laughy to lovey to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way; Tve nowfoundpeace at the end ofday.
Ifmy parting has left a voidy Then fill it with rememberedjoys. A friendship sharedy a laughy a kiss; Oh yes, these things Iy tooy will miss. Be not burdened with times ofsorrow; Lookfor the sunshine oftomorrow. My life's beenfully I savored much; Goodfriendsy good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seems all too brief; Don't lengthen yourpain with undue grief. Lift up your heart andpeace to thee; God wanted me now--He has set mefree.

Early in life under his grandmother Teco Gaines's tutelage, Dennis

committed his life to the Lord and became a member of Graham Chapel

i

i

CME Church in Quitman. Upon moving to Atlanta, Dennis became a \

j long time member of Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church

and was a member of the Steward Board.

He graduated in 1971 from Brooks County High School, where he

excelled in athletics. Dennis received a football scholarship to Albany

State University (ASU). Dennis continued to be an ardent and devoted

follower and supporter of ASU football and the athletics department.

\ I

He was initiated into his beloved fraternity of Kappa Alpha Psi in the

spring of 1973 and served as Keeper of Records, Keeper of Exchequer

and Ambassador of Goodwill.

t

Dennis received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from

i

ASU in 1975. He played professional football with the Atlanta Falcons

and in the Canadian Football League. Professionally, Dennis pursued

a career in Information Technology. He began as an employee with

SunTrust Bank (F.K.A. Trust Company Bank) and later enjoyed a long tand distinguished career as an Application Developer/Analyst with

Southern Company and its affiliates, including The Georgia Power

Company, Southern LINC and Southern Company Services, Inc.

But it was his passion for Kappa that distinguished Dennis from all his professional and worldly pursuits. He was instrumental in the founding of the Decatur Alumni Chapter. He assembled a group of 15 Kappa brothers who received the charter on April 4, 1981. Dennis served as
Polemarch of Decatur Alumni (twice) and also served on the Board
of Directors of the Southeastern Province. He is a Life Member of
Kappa Alpha Psi, a Life Member of Decatur Alumni Chapter and a Life
Member of the Southeastern Province. Dennis loved and treasured the
history and traditions of his fraternity, and anyone who engaged him quickly became aware of his deep and abiding love of all things Kappa.

Dennis is survived by two brothers, 1st Sgt. Ronald Gaines and Brian
Smart, and three sisters, Vivian (Vickie) Smart, Marcia Smart and
Adrienne Smart. One brother, Rufus Jones, preceded him in death.
