Obituary
1Jr. ~mmit (1Joc) ~mi(e 'Fo((ins, Jr. was born on May 14, 1930 in Baton Rouge , LA and was the only
son of the late Emmit Follins Sr. and Mable Follins (Willie) White. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA ('52 and '60) and a Ph .D from Kansas State University in Manhattan , Kansas in 1975. He excelled in academics as well as athletics and was a standout football player at McKinley High School in Baton Rouge , LA where he earned a football scholarship and played at Xavier University.
Dr. Follins joined the Army in December, 1953 and served for two years in Germany during the Korean War. After his military service, he returned home to educate and inspire youth in his home state of Louisiana . Before serving his country , he was a young teacher and football coach at Slidell Training School in Slidell, LA and Thomas A. Levy High School in Rosedale, LA. He also taught at the prestigious Southern University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge , LA and served as a professor in the School of Education at Southern University in Baton Rouge , LA.
He was also a devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Baton Rouge , LA where he served on the Deacon Board , Finance Committee, and as Vice President of the Credit Union.
Dr. Follins and family moved to Georgia and began his career with the Atlanta Public School System as a Social Studies teacher at Brown High School. He went on to become a well respected educator and administrator as an Assistant Principal at D.M. Therrell , Charles L. Harper, and Booker T. Washington High Schools.
Throughout his life, he dedicated his works to serving youth and improving the quality of life for young African Americans . Throughout his career of 43 years in education he received many awards, honors, and was loved by all who met him. Notably he was a dedicated member of the Louisiana Education Association, National Council for Social Studies, Phi Delta Kappa , and Kappa Phi Kappa.
Dr. Follins was a 32nd Degree member of the Prince Hall Masons (Shriners) , a Lifetime Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated , and was the 3rd Black to become an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America in the state of Louisiana . He was a charter member of the Southern University Alumni Association, Atlanta Chapter, where he also served as President.
Dr. Follins and his family lived in Atlanta, GA and served as devoted members of Ben Hill United Methodist Church since 1974. He served with the Jewels and Partners, the Veteran 's Ministry and Wednesday Corporate Bible Study. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. He was extremely dedicated to helping black youth excel in education as well as other endeavors. He will always be remembered as "Doc" by his students and as a great man of God who touched, influenced , molded, guided , counseled , and loved everyone.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 41 years, Johnnie Ricard Follins; one sister, Carolyn (James - deceased) Bergeron of Baton Rouge , LA; two sister-in-laws, Julia Audrey Philips of Baton Rouge, LA, and Beverly (Floyd) Joseph of Baton Rouge, LA; two sons , Bryan (Jena) Follins of Las Vegas , NV, Hosea Ricard deceased ; four daughters, Lorita (Kenneth) Boatner - deceased , Tracy Ricard of Atlanta , GA, Edris (Issac) Follins Patterson of Baton Rouge , LA, and Melissa (Clinton) Finch of Atlanta , GA; five grandchildren Ashley (Charles) Fort, Ashton (Ashleigh) Boatner, Justin (Alethea) Ricard, Morgan Finch, and Wesley Ennis; two great grandchildren Denver Boatner and Sebastian Ricard ; two God children , Jonathan Freemont and Ursula (Chad) Hamilton ; special children in love Barry, Salada and Kaulin Reynolds as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends .
