September 4, 1922, proved to be a brighter day on the Caribbean island of Dominica in the city of Roseau. This was the day the island added the newest member Hubert Stephen Nathaniel to the family of Selwyn and Rose Elwin.
Hubert grew up in a family of many brothers and sisters. He attended the Roseau Boys School in his early years and attended high school at St. Mary's Academy. Education was always high on Hubert's list of important accomplishments. He was an avid reader and introduced his children to the joy of reading. He also loved sports, soccer to be exact. His position was fullback, and he was a great player which earned him an opportunity to play with a professional team, the Spartans.
Along with having fun, he believed in hard work. Early in life he began working in his uncle Henry Elwin's law firm. He then moved on
to the "River Estate Rum Distillery." And because he was always looking
for an opportunity to learn something different he took a job working
at the "Shillingford Lime Plantation" in Dominica.
The travel bug bit Hubert and it was time to explore. He explored the island of St. Lucia for a while, St. Vincent and then Curacao where he settled. He found employment with Shell Oil in the refinery. He held the position of Shift Supervisor in Operations. There his job was mixing, measuring and adding the different octane levels to the refined gasoline. One would guess chemical engineering was one of the talents he would pass on.
It was in Curacao, he met and later married Evana Cresida Lake. This union lasted 61 years, and produced three children. Hubert always put his family in the fore front and decided a move to the United States was in the best interest for all.
He settled in New Haven, Connecticut in 1960 and his family joined him there in 1961.
Hubert had much to be proud of. He broke the discrimination barrier by becoming the first and only person of color to hold the positions, first of manager and then general manager over all of Drazen Lumber Company's six home improvement stores in Connecticut. This was a business much like Home Depot of today. With his knowledge of home improvement products, Hubert moved to the Standard Paint Company and had a good working partnership. He needed more. He registered for Real Estate classes and obtained a realtors license. He called this his side job, but he really enjoyed meeting and helping people.
Hubert never forgot his Catholic upbringing. He made St. Martin de Porres Church, his home parish and was determined to be a working member. The church gave him the chance to work with the Knights of Columbus in scholarship opportunities for graduating high school students.
He was a supporter of St. Jude Children's Hospital because children in need held a special place in his heart. He had firsthand

knowledge of what great doctors and researchers could accomplish after his daughter, Eveta, was cured of the crippling Polio disease in Curacao with her dad by her side.
He and Cris decided to move to Decatur, Georgia for their so called retirement in 1989. Cris took on her babies, so Hubert had to do something too. He used his talent with mathematics to work with Senior Connections and the South DeKalb Senior Center in Decatur. Managing finances came easily to him and he was in his element. He shared his knowledge of Real Estate with his son, Vincent and his other talents with his daughter, Evana and his grandsons.
He fought a valiant battle after being diagnosed with an illness that would take his physical life. On July 21, 2012, he assumed his spiritual form and went home. He joins his wife, Cresida, daughter Pretoria "Prett" Elwin, his father and mother Hubert Selwyn and Rose Elwin, his sisters; Josephine Lambert (Dennis-Grenada West Indies), Rita Lawrence (John -d), Sylvia Josse (Victor-d), Ophelia James (Raymond- Canada), Celia Elwin, brothers; H. Sharp Elwin and
Addison Elwin. He leaves a rich legacy for his children; Ingrid Abbott (McAlister)
Antigua, West Indies, Clement Mitcham (Linda) New York, NY, Eveta C. Elwin -Atlantic City, NJ, Vincent R. Elwin -West Haven, CT, Evana Elwin-Mahdi- Decatur, GA. His brothers; H. Sylvester Elwin (Althea) Brooklyn, NY, Rhouse Elwin (Irene -d) Trinidad, West Indies, John H. Elwin (Anita) Roseau, Dominica, West Indies, Agatha Elwin-Joseph -CT, and sister-in-law Patricia EdwardsMontreal, Canada.
His grandchildren, Erich Elwin, Gabriel Mahdi, McAllister Abbott, Megan Hylton (Leo), Justin Elwin (Jennifer), Brian Mitcham, Laughton Mitcham, David Mitcham, Manford Mitcham, Ernestine Mitcham; his great grandchildren, Darian Elwin, Brendan Hylton, Javier Hylton, Caelyn Elwin, Justin Elwin II, Nicolas Elwin.
Hubert, like Cresida, held Lucia James-Davis (Delroy), Ingrid Elwin-Georges, god daughter Junia Lambert, Ann Carter (Lamar), Daphne Mack (Robert), Beverly Barkley (Robert), Dr. Joseph Chandler (Dawn), Lester Young (Dorothy), Arnold Goodson (Mary), Cornell Pearson (Jackie), Barbara Jones (Allan-d), Nurse Betty
Brown(James), Nurse Nora Guy, Aide Obie Njuko, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances, close to his heart and offers his undying love and thanks.
Hubert's sly smile, his wicked sense of humor and the twinkle in his eyes will be missed by all. There is one who will especially miss giving him the kisses he looked forward to.
