Mae Ethel, as she was always called, was born the only child of Onie Kelly-Thomas and Jake C. Thomas on March 23, 1922 in Apalachee, Georgia in Morgan County. They moved and lived in Shelby, North Carolina until she was preceded in death by both parents by the age of twelve years old.
At age twelve, she returned to Georgia to live with her aunt until age seventeen when she met and married Willie Usher Elder (5/24/22 -11/24/97) of Madison, Georgia. From this union came six sons, Willie Edward (Annie Grace), Robert Lee (Levert), Freddie Lee (3/31/47-8/16/94) (Rosa), Crosby, Anthony, and Artornya; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
After moving to Atlanta, she was a homemaker until her youngest child was school age. She then went to work at Mac and Jac Cleaners on Ponce de Leon Avenue and retired from One Hour Martinizing in Tucker, Georgia.
Mae Ethel was a longtime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Eastern Stars until she moved her membership to Antioch East Baptist Church where she was active in Joyful Hands, Bible Study, and the Senior Usher Board.
She was always active in the community and participated in several activities at the Lang Carson Senior Center including the basketball team, computer classes, art, quilting, and ceramics. She also loved to travel.
Very few people knew she worked through two talent agencies in Buckhead and appeared as an extra in projects for the British Broadcasting Company.
She often said that "Having her children has been her biggest joy in life." She also said she "can't think of a soul she didn't like or ever had any hard feelings toward."
Mae departed this life on July 19, 2013 of natural causes at age 91. Her kind and loving spirit will be truly missed.
'"'When Tomorrow Starts Without Me"
When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not here to see If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me.
I wish you wouldn't cry the way you did today. While thinking of the many things we did not get to say.
I know how much you love me as much as I love you. Each time that you think of me I know you will miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand.
The angel said my place was ready in heaven far above, And that I would have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But when I walked through Heaven's Gates, I felt so much at home When GOD looked down and smiled at me from his golden throne.
He said this is Eternity and all I promised you Today for life on earth is done, but here it starts a new
I promise no tomorrow for today will always last And since each day's the exact same way, there is no longing for the past.
So when tomorrow starts without me, do not think we're apart, For every time you think of me, remember, I'm right here in your heart.
