BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
DR. HORACE GREELEY DWIGGINS
Dr. Dwiggins died September 30, 1958, at his home in Tuskegee Institute. Dr. Dwiggins was born, March 17, 1909, in Kansas City, Kansas, the second child of Horace G. and Willa Dwiggins.
He grew up in Kansas City and was graduated from Sumner High School there in 1926.
He was graduated from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1930. Vvhile a student there he beca:a1e a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In 1934 he was graduated from Meharry Medical College and shortly thereafter became a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Dwiggins served as interne at the Kansas City General Hospital No. 2, 1934-35, as resident-surgeon at Wheatley Provident Hospital, Kansas City, from 1935-37 and received staff appointment in general surgery at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1938.
His graduate work in Ophthalmology began in 1941 at the Veterans Administration Graduate School, Bronx, New York, and an externship at Billings Hospital in Chicago in 1942.
From 1947-48 Dr. Dwiggins was a resident in Ophthalmology at Provident Hospital, Chicago. During the same period he was a fellow in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Dwiggins served a s Lieutenant Colonel in the U. S. Army Medical Corps from 1942-46 and on active duty from 1944-46.
At the time of his passing Dr. Dwiggins was the Chief Ophthalmologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Tuskegee, heading the department of accredited Resident Training Program. Dr. Dwiggins also served as consultant at the John A. Andrew Memorial Hospital, the Alabama State Department of Rehabilitation and the Alabama Sight Conservation Association. The Alabama Sight Conservation work is sponsored by the Lions Club of the State.
On October 16, 1948, Dr. Dwiggins was married to Miss Mattye Byrd of Tuskegee. Three sons, Horace III, age 9, Roy, 8 and William, 5, were born to this union.
Dr. Dwiggins is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter, Gay Louise, age 18, by a f ormer marriage ; and a host of friends.
Dr. Dwiggins was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, a 33rd Degree Mason, and a member of the Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church.
