--- Cefe6rating the Life of.. ---
Eli Duke was the third child of six
born to the union of Effie and Georgia
(nee Ware) Duke. He was born on
January 28th, 1924 in Clanton, Alabama.
The family moved to the Morgan Park area
of Chicago in 1935. He and his siblings
attended John D. Shoop Elementary
School and Morgan Park High School.
It was while in high school that Eli
decided to enlist in the army to serve his
country during World War Two. After
earning ribbons in the European, Middle
Eastern, African and Phillipine theaters, he
returned to civilian life, eventually finding
a career with the U.S. Post Office.
In 1955, on a CTA bus, he met Barbara Wilson, and they married in 1956. Through this union came three children ~ Gayle Eileen (deceased), Vernessia Marguerite, and Eli Erickson. He retired from the Post Office in 1984, an occasion that was noted by an article in the Southtown Newspaper, and receiving a letter of commendation signed by 132 residents on his Beverly route.
He was truly a family~oriented man, whose family meant everything to him. He loved the outdoors, and most of his vacations were either by trailer or motorhome. He enjoyed photography, and was good at it, sometimes being asked to photograph occasions such as weddings. His warm and caring personality put people at ease, and they enjoyed being around him.
After his beloved Barbara's passing in October of 2008, Eli relocated with son Eli to live near his daughter Vernessia and her husband, David. Together they traveled and enjoyed life until illness finally claimed him on April 29th, 2012. He is preceeded in death his father, Effie Sr.; his mother Georgia Duke Shepherd; brothers Effie Duke Jr. and Lamar Duke; sisters LaVera Smith and Vemessia Nickles; daughter Gayle; and wife Barbara. He will always be remembered by daughter Vemessia Duke~Murray (David); son Eli Erickson Duke; brother Levi (Vass) and numerous neices, nephews, relatives and friends.
