Bernece Latimer Dowdy, the third of five children, was born on August 27, 1916 in Toccoa, Georgia to John Newton Franklin Latimer, M.D. and Helen Walker Latimer. The family lived in Toccoa where Dr. Latimer practiced medicine until 1927 when they moved to Atlanta, Georgia.
Bernece graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, attended Spelman College, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina in 1939.
At Benedict, she met Sam Bernard Dowdy, who would become her loving and devoted husband of more than fiftyfour years. Two daughters were born to this union, Bernice LaMelle and Hope Alexis.
Mrs. Dowdy taught in the public schools in Bennettsville, South Carolina for three years. She then became a fulltime homemaker and worked part-time for the U.S. Department of Labor for sixteen years.
She was a long time member of Wheat Street Baptist Church and President and Treasurer of the KisKis Bridge Club. But most of all, she was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a supportive family member.
Bernece Latimer Dowdy was called from labor to reward on Friday, February 16, 1996. In addition to her husband, Sam Dowdy, and children, Bernice Dowdy McDaniel, Columbus, Ohio and Hope Dowdy, Atlanta, Georgia, she is survived by sisters, Ruth Johnson Jackson, Atlanta and E. Clas Latimer, Cleveland, Ohio; grandsons, William T. "Teddy" McDaniel, Brooklyn, New York and Elliot B. McDaniel, Columbus, Ohio; son-in-law, Dr. William T. McDaniel, Jr., Columbus, Ohio; nephew, William Jefferson, Jr. and his wife Miranda and children Natalie and Louis, Atlanta; and a host of other relatives and friends.
While parting pains us all, her love is everlasting. "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven... "
